Archisculpture by Beomsik Won

March 15, 2017 by Arseny Vesnin in Graphic Design, Portfolios, Photography, South Korea, 2017

Korean artist Beomsik Won creates mind-bending collages using architectural pieces as a material for his Archicreatures. Original limited edition prints by Beomsik Won are available online at Rise Art

"Won’s process is one of deconstruction and reconstruction. Divided into two chapters, Collage and Antigravity—the latter depicting composites of precarious balance and structural incongruities—and placed in isolation on fields or parks with a low-lying horizon, his architectural constructs are monumental edifices that encapsulate the entirety of the city, era or style its components are drawn from. "

Boys Don’t Cry by Zak Group

March 13, 2017 by Arseny Vesnin in Agencies, Branding, Graphic Design, United Kingdom, 2017

Zak Group was commissioned to design a bespoke type treatment for Frank Ocean’s magazine Boys Don’t Cry and to design the masthead.

Following its long-awaited public release Frank Ocean published the foil-wrapped magazine Boys Don’t Cry which included a special release of the album Blonde. The magazine, featuring three alternate covers, was launched at four pop-up newsstands in Chicago, Los Angeles, London, and New York on Saturday, 20 August 2016. The compendium of poetry, interviews, essays and photography includes contributions from Kanye West, Wolfgang Tillmans, Tyrone Lebon, Viviane Sassen and Tom Sachs among others.

The lettering of the hand-distorted masthead was made by scanning originals on a large-format scanner. The technique of printing, capturing and manipulating original artwork references historical works by artists such as Bob Cobbing or experiments made in the late 60s with the then-new photocopy technology.

Interactive Event Posters by Studio Feixen

March 06, 2017 by Arseny Vesnin in Advertising, Agencies, Graphic Design, Motioncollector, Switzerland, 2017

Beside neat posters with sharp Swiss grids and clean typography that we reviewed last year, Studio Feixen noted for their interactive events micro-sites.

“For us it was clear that we wanted to design something that stretches the borders of what you usually see these days. We think there’s a lot to do in the area of interaction, animation and graphic design. And especially when it comes to moving typography.”
— Felix, Studio Feixen

Taste the Alphabet by Handmadefont

February 21, 2017 by Arseny Vesnin in Typography, Estonia, Graphic Design, Instagram, 2017

Handmadefont believes good ideas can be applied to anything. Even if it’s a slice of bacon, a piece of bread, a handful of seeds or a dozen of eggs it has all chances to become a fabulous typeface.

That’s why in 2008 two brothers Vladimir and Maksim Loginov founded an Estonian-based company called Handmadefont. Back then neither the font industry was that well developed, nor the term ‘handmadefont’ itself was known. People used to consider fonts as keyable raster images. They suggested a new angle: fonts can be made of what-so-ever.

They started with developing selfmade fonts from some funny everyday life objects and ended up with loads of new fonts. On Handmadefont web page you can find more than 1000 unique handcrafted fonts and animated alphabets.

Handmadefont also launches lovely competitions on their Instagram and posts cute reports on Bechance. Just lately Handmadefont brothers set up a YouTube channel too.

Pentagram - Designed by Apple Book

February 15, 2017 by Arseny Vesnin in Graphic Design, USA, 2017

Designed by Apple in California is a new book that chronicles 20 years of Apple design. This remarkable body of work is expressed through 450 photographs of past and current Apple products, from 1998’s iMac through 2015’s Apple Pencil. The book also documents the materials and techniques used by Apple’s design team over two decades of innovation.

Pentagram’s Luke Hayman and team assisted Apple in the design of the book, the first to be produced and published by the technology company. Working closely with Apple’s Chief Design Officer, Jonathan Ive, and the Industrial Design team, Pentagram supported Apple in their goal to create a book worthy of the company’s extraordinary legacy.

Singapore-based motion and CG designer Fyn Ng makes us remember the days when "skeuomorphism" was a topic trend in interface design. In his series of CG art he exaggerates that feeling by applying 3D and AR techniques to some pieces of routine interfaces we face daily.

Abstract - The Art Of Design

January 20, 2017 by Arseny Vesnin in Graphic Design, USA, Motioncollector, 2017

Netflix will premier a new original documentary series, Abstract: The Art of Design, that introduces the work and creative process of eight leading designers (and yes it will air on Netflix Russia too, starting on 10th of February). The series is produced by Wired’s editor-in-chief Scott Dadich, Morgan Neville and Dave O’Connor. Each programme will focus on a different individual, the subjects are: Bjarke Ingels (architect), Christoph Niemann (illustrator), Es Devlin (stage designer), Ilse Crawford (interior designer), Paula Scher (graphic designer), Platon (photographer), Ralph Gilles (automobile designer) and Tinker Hatfield (Nike shoe designer).

“I can guess what you’re thinking, because I have watched a lot of design documentaries. Restrained, polished, pretty—so many of them look like a moving version of a coffee table book. You’ve got softly lit interviews, esoteric conversations, and subtle tracking shots of wide landscapes beneath unobtrusive music. Most of it is clean, minimal, and boring as hell. We’re not doing that. My partners and fellow executive producers—Morgan Neville (who won an Oscar for 20 Feet From Stardom) and RadicalMedia’s Dave O’Connor—and I built a team of today’s best-known documentarians. Every episode stands as its own film, adapting the design sensibilities of our subjects.”
— Scott Dadich, Wired

P.s If you are totally in it than you have all chances to meet design gurus in life on festivals like OFFF Barcelona, FITC, Toca Me... Hurry up, tic-toc

Elena Miska

December 15, 2016 by Arseny Vesnin in Advertising, Graphic Design, USA, Portfolios, 2016

Elena Miska is a New York based art director who’s just hit refresh on her website to include new works

“I’m a graphic designer and art director living in Brooklyn, but am originally from the Bay Area in California. My whole life revolved around art and dance, and I actually went to school for a year at SUNY Purchase here in NY, but had to move back to California after a dance-related injury. (It was actually a blessing in disguise – I will always love dance, but ended up finding my calling in design.) I got my degree in Graphic Design from Academy of Art University, and worked for a few years in San Francisco doing design and art direction before moving back to New York a year and a half ago with my husband, Tom. We’re both in the same profession, and agreed that NY was the place to be (we were right!).”

Paperlux for Boris Dlugosch

November 30, 2016 by Arseny Vesnin in Germany, Graphic Design, Portfolios, 2016

Paperlux, Hamburg does not hide their excitement over the recent project made for legendary house music producer Boris Dlugosch

“What would you say if a house music legend, that only a few years ago made you get up in the middle of the night, cue at the club »Front« in Hamburg and dance till dawn, now asks you design his 20th anniversary vinyl cover?
We can’t believe our luck and keep pushing’! Very graphic and pure, but also complex and a little bit playful – that’s what we wanted the design to imply. Reduced to the beginnings: Detroit’s concrete, urban straightforwardness and a vibrant red served as our ingredients.

The vinyl does without the obsolete list of tracks and is covered by a paper sleeve that is also a poster. The cover illustrates the twenty years and you can see the »Keep Pushin’« transforming into »Still Pushin’« through the die-cut paper. The font GT Haptik provided the necessary rectilinearity with a playful twist.
Everything was printed via silk-screen printing. Together with the French paper group Arjowiggins we produced a second edition sporting four colours of their bright and lively Pop’Set collection. So now what? Don your dancing shoes and forever Pushin’!”
