Dandelight by Studio DRIFT

December 13, 2023 by Arseny Vesnin in 2023, Art, Craft, Design, Netherlands, USA

Dandelight embodies a graceful blend of art, nature, and innovation within our renowned 'Fragile Future' series. Each Dandelight is meticulously crafted using real dandelions handpicked during the annual DRIFT Spring Harvest, with every single seed delicately affixed to an LED.

This year's special edition is centred around a promising future, highlighting the potential of seeds and soil as they collaborate to foster fertility. DRIFT aimed for a sense of weightlessness through natural materials like sand and jute, while the base, cast in translucent white resin, encases dandelion seeds.

For a healthy new generation, we need to get the basics right! "This double dandelion version reflects a beacon of hope embodied in the promise of new life." shares artist Lonneke Gordijn, who is expecting her first child.

Spin ceramics by Robert Dawson

December 05, 2023 by Arseny Vesnin in 2023, Art, Craft, Portfolios, United Kingdom

Robert Dawson’s ceramic art blurs the lines between tradition and innovation, motion and permanence, and challenges conventional perceptions of craftsmanship.

Dawson's creation, Spin, beautifully encapsulates the essence of motion blur, reminiscent of the technique used in animated movies. Just as motion blur aids in creating fluidity in film sequences, Dawson's manipulation of glaze and design captures a fleeting moment, freezing it in time while alluding to movement. The Blue Willow pottery design combines fixedness and the illusion of movement, showcasing the artist’s skill.

The plates symbolise clay’s history and transformation. Dawson cleverly incorporates circularity, a fundamental principle in pottery, by showcasing the spinning process as a visible final stage in decoration. This extends the traditional concept of pottery time, inviting viewers to contemplate the craft’s evolution.

His plates honour and represent ceramic heritage while pushing boundaries..

Paper-cut corals by Rogan Brown

November 05, 2021 by Arseny Vesnin in 2021, Art, Craft, Portfolios, Sculpture
@rogan_brown_

“Artist Rogan Brown introduces his intricate cut-out paper ‘coral garden’, following his previous series that emphasised the mesmerising diversity of the coral realm. In his previous sculptures, the artist sought to capture the durable yet fragile silhouette of the corals, which is a symbol of the overwhelming impacts of global warming and man-made destruction.” via designboom

‘Coral Garden’ is part of an ongoing series displayed at Galerie Bettina in Paris, as a contemplative journey to the heart of nature. “The reefs are a potent symbol of the planet itself: teeming with life and colour and biodiversity and yet threatened with extinction because of our inability to control our own appetites and to accept the consequences of our own actions.”

Fabian Oefner Disintegrating Art

December 16, 2020 by Arseny Vesnin in 2020, Art, Craft, Photography, Portfolios

Fabian Oefner`s work explores the boundaries between time, space and reality. He creates fictional moments and spaces, that look and feel absolutely real, yet aren't. Through this, Oefner dissects the different components of reality and gives us a clearer understanding of how we perceive and define it.

Inspired by science, Oefner`s approach to art is highly methodical and at the same time playful for unexpected moments to happen. He creates carefully orchestrated works, that are planned down to the last detail as well as pieces, that use a loose framework for art to happen.

B292E947-1027-4670-BD2A-3556CA898FB3.jpeg

In his highly acclaimed "Disintegrating" series, the artist portrays performance cars, that seem to blow apart. He creates these artificial moments in time by photographing every piece of the dismantled car individually and arranges them digitally into one photograph. Spending hundreds of hours on each piece, the photographs become a hyperrealistic rendition of a moment, that never existed.

“In my work I am interested in the notions of sublime and elusion, entering into a meditative process akin to a dream-like state. The real and the fantasy weave together, hiding behind the masks, threads and layers. Expression is channeled through those shapes, finding its intention and force both in the normality and in the surreal.

The method I use in my work is based on constructing an image or an object starting from the small building blocks, which, when gradually put together, let the pattern of the whole emerge. I like to reconsider materials and shapes, finding new ways to inscribe them into the real through the imagination and moments of improvisation that occur in repetitive work.”

September 15, 2020 by Arseny Vesnin in 2020, Art, Craft, Netherlands, Portfolios

Bertjan Pot shares The Masks series begun in 2010 and still in progress, is an exploratory work on the subject. The idea originated in an unexpected reaction: wanting to make a carpet, Bertjan realises that once the textile assembled, curves are created. From there, he began to consider a first mask, the beginning of a long series. The possibilities are endless and the designer has since enjoyed creating each time new faces.

Ongoing collaboration “KIRO ╳ Zhostovo” is a clear example of how traditional folk art integrates with contemporary art. Abstract artworks of Irina Kiro (from her series “Emotionalia” she created during art residency at Mas els Igols, Spain) found new meanings as they transformed as an artistic reflection of traditional Zhosotovo painting on metal trays. The new visual meaning is painstakingly reproduced by masters from Zhosotovo factory strictly following classic cannons of 19 century.
