Melancholy dipped in sunshine by Kalle Hellzen

May 23, 2025 by Arseny Vesnin in 2025, Art, Illustration, Netherlands, Portfolios

Kalle Hellzen discovered his passion for art in his 40th. For him, being colourblind is not a barrier to creating awe-inspiring art. His condition enhances reds, dims blues and blurs mid-spectrum colours, which is why he's making incredible contrast in his work. But it's his process itself which is fascinating.

View fullsize kalle-4.jpeg

Calais begins with oil and acrylic paintings, creating original bases from which to work. He then works digitally with tools like Photoshop to generate print compositions. He often captures subjects in pause, falling, or contemplation, exploring the human experience of enduring and navigating life's challenges. Combining traditional printing, painting, varnishing, and pouring layers of gloss acrylic medium, he crafts one-of-a-kind original prints, describing his work as melancholy dipped in sunshine.

Stephan Duq

May 29, 2024 by Arseny Vesnin in 2024, Digital Art, NFT Art, Portfolios, Netherlands, Motioncollector

Stephan's work, often dark yet undeniably fascinating, delves deep into the infinite duality within us. It’s a journey that unveils the concealed harmony within our souls.

He often mixes these flowers with living metals to show his quest for harmony and balance. His artistic approach to the artwork fuses traditional concepts of sculpting and painting with the application of cold, complex digital algorithms.

His approach to his work and the contrast within the designs allowed for a nontypical visual style that could not be replicated.

Stephan's work aims to revive his collectors’ interest in romanticism. In a world filled with cushioned meaning, his work may be an empty solace in which we don't have to find meaning but can just be.

Dandelight by Studio DRIFT

December 13, 2023 by Arseny Vesnin in 2023, Art, Craft, Design, Netherlands, USA

Dandelight embodies a graceful blend of art, nature, and innovation within our renowned 'Fragile Future' series. Each Dandelight is meticulously crafted using real dandelions handpicked during the annual DRIFT Spring Harvest, with every single seed delicately affixed to an LED.

This year's special edition is centred around a promising future, highlighting the potential of seeds and soil as they collaborate to foster fertility. DRIFT aimed for a sense of weightlessness through natural materials like sand and jute, while the base, cast in translucent white resin, encases dandelion seeds.

For a healthy new generation, we need to get the basics right! "This double dandelion version reflects a beacon of hope embodied in the promise of new life." shares artist Lonneke Gordijn, who is expecting her first child.

DRIFT's aerial sculptures and architecture

October 29, 2022 by Arseny Vesnin in 2022, Art, Digital Art, Design, Netherlands
@studio.drift

What would the Sagrada Familia look like if it was finished? Imagine a full circle Colosseum... Dutch artist duo DRIFT has been working to improve their drone software to create real-life, life-size renders to visualise the improbable.

DRIFT works together with a multi-disciplinary team of 64 on aerial sculptures, installations and performances. All individual artworks have the ability to transform spaces. The confined parameters of a museum or a gallery does not always do justice to a body of work, rather it often comes to its potential in the public sphere or through architecture.

View fullsize High Rise.png
View fullsize Sagrada Familia.png

In 2017 DRIFT made their first performative art installation named Franchise Freedom. This drone show premiered at Art Basel Miami 2017, followed by performances all over the world. Besides this performative art installation DRIFT produced many more, with which the world is well known.

In collaboration with the company Drone Stories and Nova Skystories, DRIFT has used their drone technology since 2020 to reimagine the future of architecture. It is the aim to assist architects to bring their future projects to reality in a mesmerising yet sustainable way, visualising what this life size would look like.

The Truth About Reality by David Christiaan

May 02, 2022 by Arseny Vesnin in 2022, Art, Netherlands, Portfolios
@davidchristiaanart

The Idea for this artwork came to me in two stages. Whilst I was laying in bath, I saw in my mind three overlapping mirrors. This image ignited my curiosity but that alone didn’t feel complete. I don’t remember exactly how the second part of the idea came to me but I was laying in bath again. This time the thought of arrows with black and white feathers shot in overlapping gold frames with silver surfaces came to my mind. This idea was very exiting for me because I could see the symbolic, mythological and metaphorical references in it. When I was making the actual artwork and thinking about it I was feeling very inspired. “This work needs to exist”. For me, the whole process of receiving the idea, making it (in secret) and then finally exposing friends and family to it for the first time, was a very satisfying experience.

“I’ve noticed that when most people first encounter this artwork they need some time to process what they are looking at. Although the individual objects and materials are recognisable you don’t immediately realise what you are seeing or where in the work to focus your attention. The relative visual complexity of this piece is a metaphor for the complexity of reality and truth. Hence the title of the subject. Since everyone has an individual experience when they view the work, the subject matter, which is clearly about perception, and the experience of the viewer actually become one. In this way the viewers experience becomes part of the artwork itself. I have found that without actually informing people about what I think this artwork means, it inspires thought and conversation regarding what our experience of reality actually is.”

Art of Daan Noppen

December 03, 2021 by Arseny Vesnin in 2021, Art, NFT Art, Portfolios, Netherlands

Daan Noppen is an artist that explores various media like drawing, painting, film, photography and sculpture. His work invokes the irrational and engages the viewer into experiencing numinous feelings. The context of his artwork creates an urgency for raison d’être. The artist explores elements of divinity, alchemy, mysticism and rituals.

Daniel Martin art

November 12, 2021 by Arseny Vesnin in 2021, Art, Netherlands, Portfolios, Sculpture
@daniel_martin_art

Daniel lives and works in Leiden, The Netherlands. His work has been exhibited nationally and internationally. In his current work he searches for the transmutational properties of matter. The portraits and sculptures do not have a definite form and posses different realities on how they can be perceived. In order to come to new forms Daniel cuts up paintings, finds things on the street and uses creations made by others. The loose elements from these endeavours are used as disjointed brushstrokes that are reassembled in coherent shapes again, creating an object which holds no truth in shape.

Objects of Desire by Pleun Van Dijk

September 14, 2021 by Arseny Vesnin in 2021, Art, Netherlands, United Kingdom
@p_l_e_u_n

In her most recent work, Objects of Desire, van Dijk investigated the increasingly intimate relationship between humans and technology that may eventually lead to blurring of boundaries between the two.
To illustrate the concept, the designer, invented a three-step method.

In step one, the first dataset was curated containing both realistic (representing human genitals) and abstract sex toys. These toys are objects we by nature have a very close physical relationship with and could also be seen as an example of (sexual) objectification.

In step two, a pre-trained machine learning (ML) model was used to generate a collection of 1,000 new, non-existing shapes based on the initial dataset.

In step three, the generated images were curated and translated back into a three- dimensional physical reality. This resulted in a series of undefined, anthropomorphic, human-like sculptures.

The Objects of Desire design project encourages us to critically evaluate the fundamental questions and ethical implications related to the rapidly evolving relationship between humans and technology. It ‘confronts the viewer with a speculative scenario and leaves them to decide whether they perceive the outcome as human, non-human or something that exists in between.’ (van Dijk, 2021)

Bertjan Pot masks

September 15, 2020 by Arseny Vesnin in 2020, Art, Craft, Netherlands, Portfolios

Bertjan Pot shares The Masks series begun in 2010 and still in progress, is an exploratory work on the subject. The idea originated in an unexpected reaction: wanting to make a carpet, Bertjan realises that once the textile assembled, curves are created. From there, he began to consider a first mask, the beginning of a long series. The possibilities are endless and the designer has since enjoyed creating each time new faces.

Hover Through The Fog

July 14, 2020 by Arseny Vesnin in 2020, Art, Netherlands, Motioncollector, Portfolios

Today, globally people struggle in isolation, while we commemorate 75 years of freedom in Europe and beyond. That juxtaposition inspired Casper Faassen to explore the beauty in isolation, fear, hope and freedom. Together with choreographer and dancer Marne van Opstal of the internationally renowned NDT, he made a short film combining these elements in an installation with dance.

Union Haus is Calvin Sprague, Rotterdam based freelance graphic designer & illustrator with a knack for colourful, retro & playful styles. Experimenting with basic lines & shapes, he finds harmony by bridging the gap between structure & chaos. Influenced by the early works of Saul Bass to Heinz Edelmann to Milton Glaser, he sees their eccentric, colourful style as a big reason why he grew to love design.

Architectural Photography by Griselda Duch

May 13, 2020 by Arseny Vesnin in 2020, Architecture, Photography, Netherlands

Griselda Duch is a photographer specializing in landscape, still life, and architectural photography. She likes to travel around while working for both personal and commissioned projects.

“Being unique among creative and artistic professions, I think architecture is very important. Beyond merely providing shelter, architecture becomes the stage set and context for our lives, and an important influence on our living. Playing between line, shape, and color; the series aims to transport the viewer into a setting. Being drawn to the places we all inhabit and that become frames full of unusual details and combinations, I seek to reveal the role of architecture to endless possibilities, looking for aesthetic sensations where symmetry, light, color, and textures become the main protagonists.”
