Visual Tension and Emotional Depth: Olga Feldman’s Journey in 'Frequencies'

August 19, 2024 by Arseny Vesnin in 2024, Art, NFT Art, Russia, Portfolios

Digital artist Olga Feldman, a professional with an extensive background in graphic design, vector art and abstract 3D drawing, recently began a new art series titled "Frequencies." In the collection of monochrome graphic art, Feldman aims to capture essential ideas and feelings through a simple yet striking visual language, representing a generative perspective of reality.

OlgaFeldman_#009_DistantShores_01.jpg
OlgaFeldman_#009_DistantShore_06.jpg

Complexity and Simplicity

Feldman uses classic graphic tools and methods in "Frequencies," notably the stark contrast between solid black background and subtle white lines. Her systematic technique and minimised palette highlight her ability to generate complex thoughts through simplicity. The artist's careful craftsmanship and grasp of wave theory and electromagnetic oscillations are evident in every item in the series. By reducing expressive techniques, Feldman creates surfaces inviting viewers to explore the subtleties of perception and the nature of light.

View fullsize OlgaFeldman_019-CLIFF-II_01_1500.jpg

Visual and Emotional Impact

The monochrome nature of the series allows for a focused exploration of form and texture. The contrast creates a dynamic tension that draws and holds the eye. This visual tension is further amplified by the optical illusions in each work, which seem to oscillate and shift as one moves around them.

One particular piece in the series, "Emotional Landscapes,” presents an abstract artwork executed in the artist’s favourite monochromatic palette. The composition grid, based on the Fibonacci sequence, contains multiple rectangular sections, each filled with intricate white lines, creating a complex geometric structure that challenges the viewer's perception of space and form. Each segment contains a unique pattern of lines, ranging from undulating waves to more angular and geometric forms, creating a fascinating interplay between organic and structured elements.

The lines of the artworks generate an illusion of volume and texture reminiscent of topographic maps, ocean waves, or natural formations, inviting the viewer to explore the depths of each section. Despite the static nature of the image, the lines convey a sense of movement and flow, suggesting unseen forces at work within the composition. This juxtaposition of stillness and motion adds a layer of complexity to the viewer's experience.
The handmade quality of the artworks reminds of a human presence, emphasising the artist's direct engagement with her materials and subject matter. Feldman’s approach subtly contrasts Bridget Riley’s optical art, blending precision with perceptual experimentation.

“I am fascinated by the physical fact that the entire world visible to the human eye can be described by wave functions. That light, colour and form as we see them are nothing more than reflected waves and their refractions. I’m trying to show this in some of the simplest ways available to me so as not to lose the idea itself at the core.”
— says Feldman

The series resonates on both an intellectual and emotional level. Conceptually, it engages with scientific principles in an accessible and visually compelling manner. Emotionally, the works evoke wonder and curiosity, prompting viewers to question their perceptions and explore the boundaries between art and science.

Artistic Background

Olga Feldman was born in the north of Russia, in her words, "in a land of endless darkness", and currently lives in Israel. Before diving into monochrome art, Feldman garnered significant acclaim for her digital illustrations and graphic design. Her works were showcased at the OFFF Barcelona festival, a renowned event in the creative industry. Additionally, her digital illustrations have been published multiple times, including publications in "Hi-Fructoze" magazine, the book of digital and analogue illustrations "Dark Inspiration" by Victionary, and others, further solidifying her reputation as a versatile artist.

The graphics Olga Feldman created demonstrate her ability to blend conceptual depth with technical accuracy to produce visually captivating and intellectually engaging pieces. Feldman's continued investigation of minimalist expressiveness and generative perception demonstrates her potential and uniqueness as a creative.

Her use of frames in various shapes gives some of her pieces an additional layer of intrigue, which heightens the overall impression of her work. The intricate patterns and rhythmic repetitions create a meditative quality, encouraging prolonged contemplation and allowing for multiple interpretations based on the viewer's perspective and experiences.

Feldman's graphic works represent noteworthy accomplishments in modern art. They resonate with op art and minimalist art traditions, inviting the viewer to carefully examine and reflect on the interaction of forms and space. They ultimately showcase Feldman's mastery in creating complex visual effects through simplicity of line and contrast.

xhairymutantx by Holly Herndon and Mat Dryhurst

August 12, 2024 by Arseny Vesnin in 2024, Art, AI Art, USA

Holly Herndon and Mat Dryhurst’s "xhairymutantx," featured in the 2024 Whitney Biennial, is a bold exploration of identity within the sphere of artificial intelligence. This project exists both in the physical space of the Whitney Museum and online, where it challenges how AI models perceive and represent individuals, particularly through the lens of Herndon’s digital persona.

Herndon, a prominent figure in digital art and music, has become a recognizable presence in AI-generated content. When her name is entered into text-to-image programs, the output often reflects her signature look—white skin, red hair, and bright blue eyes. "xhairymutantx" takes this familiar image and distorts it, using AI models trained on manipulated photos of Herndon in exaggerated costumes.

The result? Strange, mutant versions of Herndon push the boundaries of her identity within AI.

View fullsize xhairymutantx-b.jpeg
View fullsize xhairymutantx-a.jpeg

This project isn’t just about creating unusual images—it’s about questioning how AI models, which often strive for "objective truth," can reduce complex identities to superficial traits. By amplifying Herndon’s distinctive features, the artists explore the idea of reclaiming some control over how AI represents individuals. They suggest that by exaggerating clichés, we might influence AI to redefine its understanding of identity.

"xhairymutantx" is both a playful and thought-provoking critique of AI’s role in shaping our digital selves. It challenges us to think about who controls our online identities and how we can assert agency in a world increasingly dominated by algorithms.

Let’s discover the captivating world of Nick Sheehy, an Australian-born artist and illustrator currently residing in the artistic hub of London.

Nick started his artistic career in the wild landscapes of Tasmania, where he sculpted with bronze. But fate took him away from art for some time. However, life brings us back to our true passions, and that's what happened to Nick. Living in London, he rediscovered his love for drawing, inspired by the city's lively low-brow art, illustration, street art, and graffiti scenes.

Carpoolers by Alejandro Cartagena

August 30, 2021 by Arseny Vesnin in 2021, NFT Art, Photography, Portfolios, USA
@alexcartagenamex

Carpoolers is an acclaimed documentary photo series and self-published project from Mexican photographer Alejandro Cartagena started in 2011. Concerned with the neoliberal policymaking in the city of Monterrey and rapid housing expansions on the outskirts of the city, Cartagena critically documents the fissures between blue-collar urban centres and the lack of infrastructure connecting the suburban overgrowth.

View fullsize CARPOOLERS__03.jpg
View fullsize CARPOOLERS__06.jpg
“The collection of The 50 Carpoolers depicts laborers in México captured from an overpass, commuting between distant suburbs and urban centers. Like much of my work, this project comes from a desire to tell the story of the dramatic environmental, economic, and demographic changes playing out in my home city of Monterrey. This series has circulated the internet since 2011 and has been exhibited widely around the world”
— Alejandro Cartagena
View fullsize CARPOOLERS__08.jpg
View fullsize CARPOOLERS__10.jpg

“From the vantage point of a highway overpass, the photographer has vividly and repetitiously documented the contract workers and tradesmen who hitch rides in the back of the trucks that will take them to that day’s worksite. As many as eleven labourers are seen at a time in open beds scattered with equipment and commercial goods; many sleep side-by-side, perhaps as strangers to each other. Provoking in its apparent ubiquitousness, this fiercely conceptual series raises concerns regarding the failure of urbanism and neoliberalism in Mexico; its ecological ramifications; and social and economic stratification—within the confines of the image itself even the driver and owner of the vehicle, concealed in the cabin and unseen to us, holds a superior status to the labourers who are exposed to the elements.“

carpoolers.jpeg
“The way the worker is lying on the bed of the truck with the old wood really gives the sense of the invisibility of the people that build our cities. Having worked in the service industry for years myself...in hotels and restaurants, traveling for hours in buses, that invisibility was latent and a burden that is not to be taken lightly. It was also a space to build an idea of the life I wanted. 10 years, traveling 3-4hrs a day back then, has made me very thankful of my life today”

The Word Search Series by Graham Kelman

August 26, 2021 by Arseny Vesnin in 2021, Art, Portfolios, Sculpture, USA
@grahamkelman

The Word Search Series by artist Graham Kelman investigates concepts of contradiction and loss of meaning through the use of a single sculpture made from many individual sculptures. Each viewer is invited to excavate the hidden poem(s).

The artwork is designed to evolve into new works, where each glyph module moves on a system of hidden rails. New poems are composed on a regular basis.

“n 2017, I had the idea to create a modular artwork composed of smaller sculptures that could be rearranged to create new pieces. Working with @jennyholzerstudio influenced me to do something a little more direct, thinking about the alphabet as a kit of parts. I’ve been interested in the intersection of Graphic Design and Architecture, and this project was a good opportunity to explore that.

Little did I know that it would take me almost four years to complete the series. This is the first work I completed this year.

Something else was happening during this time. It seemed like words in culture were increasingly losing their power to convey a common meaning. Two different people could read the same thing and draw wildly different conclusions, almost predictably, based on their pre-affiliated tribe.

Perhaps, I could create a series of word-search puzzles that could celebrate misinterpretation, contradiction, and loss of meaning, where everybody could draw their own conclusion and choose something they could be upset about, together. I wanted it to appear beautiful and almost decorative at first, and really force people to dig out the little depressing poems inside.

Unfortunately, I didn’t really think too deeply about what it would take to conceive, design, and produce 26 custom individual sculptures, fabricated hundreds of times to create a variety of language and meaning. Each letter was a meticulous mini-project.”

Lantomo

@lantomo

Italian artist based in Barcelona Antonella Montes works under Lantomo moniker. She studied architecture in Italy, in Rome and Genoa; then moves to Spain, specialising in scenography and exhibition design. Just a few years ago, since 2010, Lantomo started to dedicate herself exclusively to painting, and her passion has definitely become a job. And in this journey, her stay of almost two years in Beijing, China, have left an indelible trace. Her drawings have become more accurate and detailed, her only colours the black and white, with touches of red, and the drawn faces have come to have Asian features.

lantomo-1.jpeg
“The graphite portraits I create are almost realistic, suspended in a personal universe between realism and vision, but I’m not interested in virtuous details, I look for the representation of the emotions of my subjects.
Drawing has always been present in my life, like a way of expressing myself. My portraits embody a feeling of isolation and introspection, involved in silence. Memory, fears and loneliness in this society are the subjects that obsess me.
I try to bring to the surface all traces of emotions behind a gaze.”

“In 2011 I made a piece called "Ancient Area Network" which depicts a LAN Party in an old building that wasn't anything like the half-timbered house I lived in for many years, but it was my attempt to capture the atmosphere and chaos these gatherings had. I started this cycle 10 years ago with a depiction of a LAN Party and I'm closing it with another. This time with more delpherian touches to it. Mr. Wanderer is back with a whole duffle bag full of connectivity issues.”

2003-cornelius-dammrich-5.jpeg

“When I was 14, the most common LAN theme we had were birthday and weekend LANs that would go for two days and were never attended by more than 8 people. There was one LAN hosted by a student committee at my Highschool with roughly 130 people attending but that was never the norm for us. Most of us were not (yet) nerdy enough for the demo scene and we were too young and poor to attend the big boy LAN parties in early 2000 Germany.”

2003-cornelius-dammrich-6.jpeg

“The host’s parents would organize soda, snacks and a hearty alternative ("real food"). Every attendee would arrive half an hour apart and the first third of the night was usually spend with troubleshooting the network ("can anyone see me?","okay, let's all set the same workgroup", etc.), the second third was spend sharing porn, DVD rips, MP3s and games and the last part was either playing actual games or a combination of playing games and re-installing windows on someone’s PC because something broke.”

Fraktality

@fraktality

“It started in early 2015. As it usually happens with artists, Nick had dozens of ideas, a huge inspiration and motivation, but  still had to go to his regular job.

The salvation came in the form of lentils, unexpectedly. He has been scrolling his Instagram feed and saw a weird, but remotely familiar art piece - lenticular print. And the strongest insight has happened. From this point, Fraktality Big Journey took its start. Lenticular technology has become the basic Fraktality Team feature. Sure thing, it allows to achieve the truly psychedelic and mind blowing visual effect in real life, since the artists can insert up to 50 frames of animation under the special plastic. The core idea is to create harmless visual psychedelics. Some people say Fraktality art may even provoke an epileptic seizure, so strong its’ influence on the people’s mind. And we can’t disagree.”

Fraktality is a living organism, which is spread all around the world, amazing partnerships with such persons as Eddie Alcazar, Maalavidaa, Brizbazaar,Salvi Droid, Ivimoart, Youhodler, UnityNetwork, Brockhofer, Marwan Shahin, Burgandy Viscosi, StickerSavage, Sid Wilson from Slipknot,Samuel Farrand, Bangeroo, Mifsudvision, Alexsmeat,Bucwah,Callifinkart also artists who has been successfully taught to work in lenticular technology.
