Conversation

June 15, 2017 by Arseny Vesnin in Art, Photography, Portfolios, South Korea, 2017

Emmanuel Levinas, a French philosopher, states that Other, dissimilar and incommensurable to oneself, appears to one as a ‘visage’. Though the manifestation of Other’s visage, both natural and inevitable, could seem to one as an unilateral intrusion, it establishes a passage to transcend the outer world from the enclosed inner self as the subject that perceives and embraces the visage. One, therefore, is completed from the responsibility and understanding of Other, ultimately finding one’s true self.

The photography project ‘Conversation’ is a journey that begins from concerns of acquaintances, eventually finding oneself in the process. In the photographs, the space becomes the world where one encounter the Other, and the cloth tossed into the air becomes the medium that draws out one's relationship with Other. Other, as an unsubstantial light flashed into space, actualises when the visage materialises onto the aimlessly tossed cloth, and one’s act of capturing the moment signifies one's conversation with the Other. One finds one’s essence through Other, not just an illusion of light, but as a real existent materialised on a white cloth.

Water Made Active

June 14, 2017 by Arseny Vesnin in Advertising, Motioncollector, 2017

In its new ‘Water Made Active’ ad for G Active, Gatorade pushes the boundaries by creating a stop-motion athlete using drops of water, precision-timed strobe photography and a liquid printer.

As if the result alone wasn’t impressive enough, the team has revealed that the commercial was made entirely in-camera. James Medcraft, the project’s director of photography explained, “We’re using the flash to freeze the water droplets at a very precise moment in space, and we’re having to do that with millimeter and microsecond accuracy.”

The liquid printer, which took 5,000 man-hours to build, comprises more than 20,000 parts and 2,048 individual nozzles. Each nozzle turned on and off within two milliseconds. The printer would drop frame-by-frame animations, which the strobes would freeze in mid-air via flash. To create the motion sequence, the team charted data from a real athlete who ran, jumped, and kicked while wearing sensors.

Giovanni Gastel Photography

June 12, 2017 by Arseny Vesnin in Fashion, Italy, Photography, Portfolios, 2017

"Giovanni Gastel's static scenes provide an alluring and unsettling glimpse into private spaces characterised by poetic irony and balance"

"Combining minimalist design with voyeuristic angles, audiences are invited to measure and compare different modes of domesticity in the works of Giovanni Gastel. Each living room is a hive of conceptualised activity"

" Milan-born Giovanni Gastel first has contact with photography in the 1970s, which truly began to take shape in 1981 when he was introduced to the world of fashion, collaborating with the likes of @vogueitalia and @mondouomo. Ritratti di Living plays upon flattened shadows and deep colours, providing an emotional backdrop for the lifestyles advertised."

Casey Weldon

June 06, 2017 by Arseny Vesnin in Art, Portfolios, USA, 2017

Casey Weldon (previously) crafts surreal, sometimes absurd paintings that play with the everyday and the otherworldly alike. The artist, based in Washington, D.C., is featured in a new show at Thinkspace Gallery in Los Angeles. “Sentimental Deprivation” continues the thread of that duality in the artist’s work. The show starts June 3 and runs through June 24

Doodle Art by Visoth Kakvei

June 02, 2017 by Arseny Vesnin in Illustration, Instagram, Portfolios, 2017

"Cambodian artist Visoth Kakvei masterfully brings together symbolism and style, and no sketchbook has enough pages for his creativity.

The 27-year-old graphic designer usually draws his works freehand and the pieces take 3-6 hours to finish, but sometimes Kakvei feels it's not enough. So, to make his incredibly intricate maze-like illustrations even more stunning, the artist digitally enhances them, making the doodles appear as if they're popping out from the pages.

His mostly nature-inspired designs have already earned Visoth a staggering 800k following on Instagram and his fan army only keeps on growing."
