Australian artist Joel Rea creates photorealistic paintings of natural landscapes and fantastical scenes with a surreal touch. What’s especially impressive is how he manages to paint waves in a way that seem to bring them alive. Rea, who calls himself a ‘contemporary surrealist painter’, often puts himself into his own paintings. via iGNANT

Maciek Jasik (previously) is fascinated by the tales behind fruits and vegetables and seeks to reintroduce these mystical qualities back into their being through his eerie depictions of squash, pineapples, horned melons, and others. “The Secret Lives of Fruits and Vegetables” aims to bring back the characteristics “that have been lost amidst the clamor of nutritional statistics,” says Jasik. “Each offers its own indelible powers beyond our narrow habits of thought.” via Colossal
Environmental artist HULA known for his series of water murals moves further and takes icebergs with paint and faith. Check artist statement “Series of murals painted on a few of the thousands of icebergs freshly broken off from a nearby glacier. In the short time I was there, I witnessed the extreme melting rate first hand as the sound of ice cracking was a constant background noise while painting. Within a few weeks these murals will be forever gone, but for those who find them, I hope they ignite a sense of urgency, as they represent the millions of people in need of our help who are already being affected from the rising sea levels of Climate Change.”

"Los Angeles based Turkish artist Refik Anadol wants us to slow down and make technology into something we consciously see and feel..His most recent installation, titled the “Infinity Room” at Zorlu Performing Art Center in Turkey, is a trippy, black and white installation that uses audio and visual stimulation to alter one’s sense of the room. For this, he installed a cinema screen, onto which 3D kinetic animation based on algorithms was projected. It is part of his ongoing project titled, “Temporary Immersive Environment Experiments,” which takes the idea of immersion. Immersion into virtual reality is a perception of being physically present in a non-physical world." via Hi-Fructose

"Faig Ahmed distorts the patterns of traditional Azerbaijani rugs, dimantling their structure in order to build compositions that trick the eye by appearing to melt off the wall. By rearticulating the original design, he creates contemporary sculptural forms that look like digital glitches, patterns flatlining halfway through a tapestry or gradually morphing into a digital mosaic." via Colossal
Ahmed lives and works in Baku, Azerbaijan and graduated from the sculpture department of Azerbaijan State Academy of Fine Art in 2004. The artist previously focused on painting, video, and installation, but now currently focuses on textile and sculpture.
