Ron Mueck "Mass" Large-scale Skull Installation

NGV Melbourne
December 15, 2017 by Arseny Vesnin in Art, Australia, United Kingdom, Sculpture, 2017

As part of NGV Triennial, twenty large-scale new artworks have been commissioned by the NGV, including Ron Mueck’s Mass 2016–17, a monumental work of extraordinary presence comprising 100 individual skulls.

"Mass" is an installation of 100 individual human skull forms piled up on the gallery floor, each which engage with the architecture of the site.

"The installation brings to mind the massed remains in the catacombs of Paris, an imposing wall of human heads that resonates with a simultaneous and strange sense of impermanence and eternality. In ‘Mass’, Mueck celebrates the form that links all humanity and pays homage to a symbol that has stood within the art of essentially all cultures and religion. surrounded by skulls covering nearly every surface of the walls, visitors are reminded of the transience of life" via designboo

Sam Adefé

November 28, 2017 by Arseny Vesnin in Illustration, Portfolios, United Kingdom, 2017, Art

After a quick view of Sam Adefé sanguine and charcoal drawings, we fell in love with his portraits, emotionally charged, "provoking conversation about certain subject matters that are being ignored, in hope of changing how we chose to look at certain things"

First floor - Kitchen and Dinning area

Highgate Hill by LLI Design

November 27, 2017 by Arseny Vesnin in Architecture, Interior Design, Photography, United Kingdom, Agencies, 2017

London-based LLI Design lead by Linda Levene recently completed a total redesign and refurbishment of a 7 storey townhouse in Highgate, a leafy and desirable part of the city.

First floor - Kitchen Island

Kitchen, Fireplace + Chaise + Joinery Unit

The owners wanted to create a new environment; they liked the idea of having a contemporary house and agreed that the house lent itself to this, however they were concerned that contemporary design could be cold and impersonal.

3rd Floor - Formal Living Room

The brief was to create a contemporary family home, not in a stark clinical sense, but rather, colourful and practical. The key to the overall success of the design was to re-think the dynamics of all the spaces and change the existing layouts to provide a design and flow which responded to their brief. The family had a large collection of vintage travel posters that they wished to display prominently around the house.

4th floor Bedroom

4th Floor - Bespoke Red Lacquer Bed Detail

5th Floor - Master - Dressing - Ensuite

By changing the dynamics of the spaces involved we maximized the available space creating a contemporary, but colourful, warm and inviting home; with a harmonious feel as you move up the house, but with each floor having its own character. As with the majority of LLI Design’s projects, the construction, joinery, home automation and landscaping were carried out by our in-house vertically integrated teams - Pegasus Property & Pegasus Automation.

Above Below Beyond: Janeanne Gilchrist

November 27, 2017 by Arseny Vesnin in Photography, Portfolios, United Kingdom, 2017

"Above Below Beyond" is an ongoing solo exhibition at The Fergusson Gallery of Scottish photographer Janeanne Gilchrist (Staunch Industries). Her work explores the world under the waves and man's relationship with the sea. With strong themes of folklore, fantasy created from man-made waste, dive with Janeanne into my subconscious mind to find a deeper meaning of life. Freediving in various locations in the Scottish seas for the last 10 years, she has discovered a beautiful new world where gravity doesn’t apply and everything is in constant flux.

Advent Calendar 2017 by Mr Bingo

November 13, 2017 by Arseny Vesnin in Illustration, United Kingdom, Portfolios, 2017

Guy behind "Hate Mail" and "quintessentially English" artist Mr Bingo (he once called us the peniscollector) is back again with his new Advert Calendar for December 2017. Same as last year approach, Mr Bingo called for the internet to crowdfund his new calendar with a simple challenge “NUDES WANTED, would you like to feature in my 2017 advent calendar?"

“Sorting through the applicants was a big job, I spent about 4 days stalking the 260 people online, looking for images of them and made a big spreadsheet of every single person, where they were in the world and a brief description of what they looked like. Then I somehow whittled it down to 25 people, trying to get as many different types of people represented.”

Pippa Young Art

November 09, 2017 by Arseny Vesnin in Art, Portfolios, United Kingdom, 2017

"Exuding a Renaissance aura and staring at the distance with haunted eyes, Pippa Young’s characters are born from a jumble of influences, the most notable of all being photographic imagery. The British artist’s characters, often young girls resembling art historical figures, seem displaced in time. Posing against unadorned backdrops and separated from imposed narratives, Young plays on the ambiguity of the figures, leaving us to construct our own stories and interpretations of each one."

The Cereal Abode at Greenwich Peninsula

Greenwich Peninsula
November 06, 2017 by Arseny Vesnin in Interior Design, United Kingdom, 2017, Architecture

The Cereal Abode is as much an investigation of space, form and colour, as it is an opportunity to create a beautiful, functional living space. Created in partnership with Greenwich Peninsula (architect Santiago Calatrava) and Aucoot, Cereal Magazine has styled the interior of a new duplex penthouse, which is for sale on Greenwich Peninsula – an area of London undergoing a cultural transformation

Maxim Zhestkov Launches on Sedition

October 20, 2017 by Arseny Vesnin in Digital Art, Portfolios, Russia, Motioncollector, United Kingdom, 2017

Our friend and talented motion artist Maxim Zhestkov launches on our partners Digital Auction Platform Sedition Art

Ahead of the launch of Maxim Zhestkov’s first digital edition on Sedition, Elements, this October 2017, they interviewed the visual and motion graphic artist from his studio in Russia to discuss his surreal animations, his approach to his own work and its subsequent reception.

Read it on Sedition

Elements is an experimental video work by Maxim Zhestkov, which explores nature, physics, art and love through digitally animated ‘particles’ or ‘elements’. More than two billion particles, governed by tensions and forces influenced by those occurring in nature were used to replicate the motion of collective behaviour. As well as patterns of motion, the particles tell stories and evince emotional responses.

@zhestkov

The film is a trial by the artist to explore the idea that everything around us and inside us is made from simple elements or blocks, which can be arranged in complex relationships and become compound structures. It demonstrates that there is a relationship between the tiny and individual, and the enormous and multiple. The ideas the work explores brings together emotions, behaviours, thought processes, relationships, life, planets and the universe.

Spirit of Ecstasy

September 26, 2017 by Arseny Vesnin in Art, United Kingdom, Portfolios, Sculpture, 2017

Titled ‘The Spirit Of Ecstasy’, the artwork is a collaboration between the unnamed model, Chemical X and artist Schoony. According to the press release, “the British model and actress, who is a fan of Chemical X’s and already collects his work, has been identically recreated – as a hyperreal silicone and fibre glass model.”

The model was digitally scanned “posing in position with her hands and feet life cast” with her head and body 3D printed in order to make the silicone sculpture. This was then suspended into five sheets of acrylic “surrounded by a halo of 7,254 meticulously hand placed pills.” See images of the artwork below.

Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa by architect Thomas Heatherwick

September 19, 2017 by Arseny Vesnin in Architecture, South African Republic, United Kingdom, Photography, 2017

"Housed in what was once Cape Town’s tallest building is the newly unveiled Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (Zeitz MOCAA), created by London-based architect Thomas Heatherwick. The institution’s 80 gallery spaces were converted from 42 historic grain silos, storage units which were once used to hold and grade maize from all over South Africa"

"Heatherwick Studio transformed the tightly packed tubes into open areas of contemplation, carving out various oblong shapes to make room for large social spaces and lots of light from overhead windows. Heatherwick wished to clear out large spaces for the galleries, however he was also careful about not eliminating the tubular structure of the building completely."

“We realised we needed to do something that your eye couldn’t instantly predict. Our role was destructing rather than constructing, but trying to destruct with a confidence and an energy, and not treating the building as a shrine.”
