“Encounters of the new trans-seasonal elements that have arrived in nature. Playfully interacting with found objects.Be it threatening to burst a balloon with a newly-grown thorn on a stem of blackberries. Or a freshly picked apple walking precariously on a tight-line In a world of brutalist concrete. Made so not a sprout of life would linger. ”

Landscapes by James Gilleard

October 19, 2016 by Arseny Vesnin in Illustration, United Kingdom, Portfolios, 2016

Talented animator and illustrator James Gilleard creates landscapes that definitely can be a sandbox for modern Lonely Toons characters. They only thing I'd add at the end of each perfectly done set is "That's all folks!" phrase

Pink Project by Portia Munson

October 10, 2016 by Arseny Vesnin in Art, United Kingdom, Portfolios, 2016

Recently exhibited at Frieze Art London "Pink Project" of Portia Munson is a bold setup of feminst artists represented by NY Gallery P.P.O.W.

P.P.O.W.’s booth at Frieze London, 2016. Photo by Benjamin Westoby for Artsy

"The highlight of P.P.O.W.’s booth is certainly Portia Munson’s 1994/2016 Pink Project: Table, in which the artist collected hundreds of pink, plastic items—dolls, My Little Ponies, makeup receptacles, hair accessories, and mirrors among them—marketed at young girls and women. The table is not just a feast for the eyes, but also a trip down memory lane and a potent reminder of consumerism’s influence on children." Artsy

““Pink Project,” first exhibited in the New Museum’s Bad Girls exhibition in 1994, consists of thousands of discarded pink objects carefully arranged on a large table. It is a visual overload of products that were created to appeal specifically to women and girls, including hair clips, pacifiers, fake fingernails, combs, dildos, cleaning products, toys, tampon applicators, kitchen gadgets and hundreds of other items, all representing mass seduction and consumption. The “Pink Project” has taken various forms: as sculpture, presented in glass vitrines, as a room-sized mound, a bedroom (exhibited at Mass MOCA in 2010), and a glass coffin.

Each iteration of the work has revealed the marketing of femininity and the infantilization of the female gender while also exploring the culturally loaded color pink and its continued societal projection onto girls and women.”

London From Above by Jeffrey Milstein

October 05, 2016 by Arseny Vesnin in United Kingdom, Portfolios, Photography, 2016

Earlier this month photographer Jeffrey Milstein hired a helicopter to capture London in a sensational series of images. The pictures - which include Buckingham Palace, Charing Cross station and the British Museum - were all taken within the space of an hour and, incredibly, with the helicopter door wide open.

Our Colour by Liz West

September 23, 2016 by Arseny Vesnin in Art, United Kingdom, Portfolios, TOP 2016, Digital Art, 2016

"Liz West creates a multi-coloured rainbow space for Bristol Biennial. Known for her vibrant light installations, the artist filled an empty office block with gel-filtered, fluorescent shades, from radiant red to nostalgic violet. West wanted to build a sensory experience that will put human perception in focus. ‘Our Colour’ site-specific project let her find that the eye travelling through an entire palette will most likely return to the colour it finds most comfortable and pause to enjoy it."

Honeycomb Staircase for NYC Hudson Yards by Thomas Heatherwick

September 15, 2016 by Arseny Vesnin in Architecture, United Kingdom, USA, 2016

Citing Dezeen

"British designer Thomas Heatherwick has revealed a honeycomb-like structure comprising a series of interconnected staircases to sit at the centre of the vast Hudson Yards development on Manhattan's West Side. Named Vessel, the giant sculpture was unveiled today by Heatherwick and New York mayor Bill de Blasio as "the centrepiece to a grand new public space" in the under-construction neighbourhood.

It will sit in a public plaza and gardens designed by Nelson Byrd Woltz Landscape Architects, and among 16 skyscrapers underway as part of the city's largest urban development since the 1930s Rockefeller Center. The structure comprises a series of metal-clad staircases and landings that connect to form a honeycomb pattern in the shape of a tall vase or urn."

“The goal became to lift people up to be more visible and to enjoy new views and perspectives of each other. The idea is that it will act as a new free stage set for the city and form a new public gathering place for New Yorkers and visitors”

Ventricle

August 26, 2016 by Arseny Vesnin in Art, USA, United Kingdom, 2016

Ventricle is a two-part installation created by SOFTlab that was commissioned by the Southbank Centre in London for the Festival of Love. The installations recall the heart, a symbol that has been used for many centuries and in many cultures to represent love. Along with the chambers of the heart, the installations are a modern interpretation of the hanging gardens of Babylon, a place of many cultures and languages, and also of Eden, a place of free knowledge and expression.

Matt McDermott - Gravity’s Law

August 23, 2016 by Arseny Vesnin in United Kingdom, Portfolios, Motioncollector, TOP 2016, 2016

Based on a poem by Rainer Maria Rilke.
'To fall, patiently to trust our heaviness'
Inspired by Rainer Maria Rilke’s poem ‘Gravity’s Law’, McDermott taps into themes of meditation and nature in a deliberate response to the overload of information in modern society.
He was drawn to The Barbican Centre and estate because of its otherworldly quality and achieves a sense of calm with his long free-falling shots against the brutalist architecture.

Left Out by Maxwell Rushton

July 21, 2016 by Arseny Vesnin in Art, United Kingdom, Sculpture, 2016

As there is literally no Planet B we must think not only about our relationship with environment but with the people around us, especially the ones in need. It is still unclear how we can raise millions in kickstarter for another gadget and avoid helping a bunch (in terms of percentage) of homeless people. British sculptor Maxwell Rushton approached by similar thoughts has created a "Left Out" piece on streets of London where nearly 7000 slept rough on streets during last year.
