Budapest - The Taste of Europe

August 26, 2019 by Arseny Vesnin in 2019, Motioncollector, Russia

This new image-based video clip about Budapest is the result of an international collaboration between the Russian TimeLab video studio and the world-famous Hungarian musician, Havasi.

“In the video we see sleepy Budapest trams crossing the Széchenyi chain bridge.. dawn over the Danube River.. the majestic layout of the city from a bird's eye view... the glittering lights of Budapest by night... and the sunset over St Stephen's Basilica... and all this juxtaposed with the astounding music of Havasi.”

Duel by VOLNA

August 23, 2019 by Arseny Vesnin in 2019, Motioncollector, Digital Art, Russia, Agencies

The gloom ripples while something whispers,
Silence has set and coils like a ring,
Someone’s pale face glimmers
From a mire of venomous color,
And the sun, black as the night,
Takes its leave, absorbing the light.

M. Voloshin

The kinetic light installation "Duel" takes inspiration from the idea that conflict can act as a driving force. The concept of duality finds expression in the installation’s achromatic color scheme, as well as in its construction and form.

duel-volna-00.png
duel-volna-02.png
duel-volna-03.png
duel-volna-04.png

The installation’s main elements are 16 discs, all nearly flat and each with two opposite sides: one dark and one light. The opposites are in a constant state of “dueling” with each other, and all their attempts to reach one another instead result in continuous three-dimensional rotation. One recognizes in this movement the characteristic twists and turns of a coin that has been tossed into the air. The die has been cast, but the contest has not been decided yet. The discs’ movement through the air creates choreographed scenes with lights and shadows moving across space – the byproduct of a confrontation between two opposite and yet interconnected principles.

View fullsize duel-volna-09.png

The installation was first presented on July 27-28, 2019 at the Present Perfect Festival in St. Petersburg in a separate space in the former factory. 16 motorized light elements were fixed to a 30-meter-long structure assembled in the form of a parabola and then driven in a smooth synchronous movement by custom created software.

Computations - Art Film by Maxim Zhestkov

August 12, 2019 by Arseny Vesnin in 2019, Russia, Motioncollector, Digital Art

Computations is an experimental art film directed and designed by Maxim Zhestkov at Zhestkov Studio. It speculates a distant future when computation moves from the opaque ‘black boxes’ of our laptops and devices out into the world. He boldly envisions lush dynamic systems, which he compellingly describes as “floating networks of small transistors—some kind of strange computing organism.” Evoking both supercomputers and synaptic structures, the shapeshifting forms are serene and enigmatic.

The complex systems at the heart of Computations sway and undulate in perfect synchronization. Comprised of billions of particles, they are more than the sum of their parts—they are thinking machines that visualize, calculate, and communicate through coordinated movement and coloured illumination. Elements rise and fall, clusters lock into place, and there is an underlying sense of order governing the ornate spatial choreography. The forms are artfully embedded in architecture, perform in space, and demonstrate how each tiny element contributes to the construction of an elegant, emergent whole.nstag

Supernova - Art film by Maxim Zhestkov

May 07, 2019 by Arseny Vesnin in 2019, Digital Art, Motioncollector, Russia, Portfolios

Supernova is an experimental 4K art film directed and designed by Maxim Zhestkov and made in Zhestkov.Studio

“Everything around and inside us was conceived in a huge explosion of a star billions of years ago… and, probably, recycled from other matrices myriad times. In this eternal carousel of matter, particles gather, form complicated structures and then burst into all directions fusing atoms together and producing new elements and points of view, new colours and patterns of perception. “

“Explosions could be perceived as a destructive force and the process of tearing previously formed matter apart and, therefore, could have negative connotations; however, fundamentally, only the process of breaking familiar structures and rearranging them into new, more sophisticated shapes could kindle new meanings and ideas and be the main creative force forming the future.”

Neon Through the Looking-Glass

April 15, 2019 by Arseny Vesnin in 2019, Hong-Kong, Photography, Portfolios, Russia
“People see you and do not see you at the same time. They are focused on their affairs, in their own unusual world. They seem to feel the fluctuation of reality from your presence, from changing the position of the sun, the angle of view, architecture or scenery. But at the same time, it does not matter at all in comparison with their own world and affairs. It’s like going through the looking glass. The world is changing from a different perspective. ”

Kokosmos by Anna Radchenko

Kokosmos is a purely visual, experimental piece inspired by space and our fascination with the unknown. A surreal fantasy, aimed to extend our perception of reality by letting us wonder over the existence of a higher being and our connection with her.

Kokosmos-6.gif
Kokosmos-5.gif

Shot in Moscow by the award-winning director and photographer Anna Radchenko, Kokosmos is a tribute to Russia’s infatuation with space.

Somewhere between a fashion film, a music piece and an experimental video, Kokosmos embraces reality and extends it through magical realism by visually answering the question: what if? The video is Radchenko’s first piece combining CGI with real footage, a direction that she is looking to explore with her future productions.

Kokosmos is a collaboration with model Yana Dobroliubova, recognised for her striking and ethereal looks which break away from traditional beauty standards. Inspired by Dobroliubova’s unearthly aesthetic, as well as Japanese manga artist Shintaro Kago, Radchenko expresses our constant need to explore and search by focusing on the concept of the all-seeing eye.

The music and sound was custom made specifically for this piece. Collaborating with creative music and sound design duo Playhead, they worked with the London-based singer songwriter Alyusha Chagrin to create an otherworldly-sounding language to fit the scenario.

Similarly, the choice of clothing and make-up is also meant to fit with post-soviet space theme; Radchenko brings in elements of folklore by specifically selecting Russian fashion designers and sticking to a neon color palette featuring bright shades of green and purple.

““Growing up in post soviet Russia I’d be constantly dreaming about space, the unknown and what was out there, almost like an unknown entity we were trying to reach out to. With Kokosmos I wanted to express exactly that: my vision of what space and this god-like presence would look and feel like”

Western Taiwanese by Mariia Ominina

March 20, 2019 by Arseny Vesnin in 2019, Art, Graphic Design, Portfolios, Russia, Typography
@mashaomi

Mariia is a poster designer from Russia, she works as a digital artist, but mostly creates posters. Also, Mariia is a student of the world-famous poster artist Peter Bankov.

For the past few years, Mariia has traveled and worked extensively in Asia. She explored cultural differences, the reasons for the immigration of Western people who come to live in Asia, and the difficulties they face living in Asian countries.

View fullsize Posters_final_exhibition_Masha -1-min.jpg
View fullsize Posters_final_exhibition_Masha -2-min.jpg

Mariia's travels and explorations resulted in a three-month solo exhibition entitled "Western Taiwanese", which opened in Dounan City in November 2018. For this exhibition, the artist prepared a series of poster, and also for the first time worked in video art and installation formats.

View fullsize Posters_final_exhibition_Masha -3-min.jpg
View fullsize Posters_final_exhibition_Masha -4-min.jpg

In her posters, Mariia tried to visually reflect her impression of Yunlin County, where she lived at the time. She used a variety of visual research methods to capture cultural landscapes while creating the style of her posters. For example, she used Google Earth footage for the visuals, and Mariia also worked with local historians in the archives department. Mariia has created a vibrant palette of 6 colors along with a dynamic composition that together reflects the brilliance and quirkiness of Taiwanese nature.

View fullsize Posters_final_exhibition_Masha -6-min.jpg

Wang Chia Wei, curator of this exhibition, says Maria's exhibition was a completely new way to see Taiwanese culture. She also added that these posters are more like hokku, where the artist expresses deep meaning in simple words.

View fullsize Posters_final_exhibition_Masha -7-min.jpg
View fullsize Posters_final_exhibition_Masha -8-min.jpg

Mariia Ominina's project "Wester Taiwanese" is a fresh look at the world of poster art, where the artist expresses herself not through direct visual clues, but via vague images or meanings. Mariia managed to capture the connection between meanings and the visual component in the paradigm of postmodern aesthetics, where the classical "laws" and "norms" in design have ceased to be decisive. Her posters are lively and interesting, plunging into the confluence of new-old art, that borders between meaning and visuality; conceptualism and avant-garde.
