Saint Petersburg in Film by Scuratti Surprise

November 16, 2017 by Arseny Vesnin in Motioncollector, Russia, 2017

"The history of cinema appears to be easy to do. Lars von Trier has shot the whole American dilogy without leaving the building. We’ve replayed the scenes from the world-known films within the confines of Saint-Petersburg only. Then what? Сome and see, behold and film."

Кажется, что историю кино легко пересказать. Ларс Триер снял американскую дилогию, не выходя из здания. Мы же воспроизвели сцены из мирового кинематографа, не покидая Петербург. По формуле: иди и смотри, смотри и снимай. The history of cinema appears to be easy to do. Lars von Trier has shot the whole American dilogy without leaving the building. Moodles

November 09, 2017 by Arseny Vesnin in Digital Art, Motioncollector, Portfolios, USA, 2017

Moodles is a short animation based on the effects of negative emotions on one's self. It turns built up tension, stress, and anxiety into creative catharsis. Frozen figures – once paralyzed by moods – are reduced to heaps of flexible nothingness.

Maxim Zhestkov Launches on Sedition

October 20, 2017 by Arseny Vesnin in Digital Art, Portfolios, Russia, Motioncollector, United Kingdom, 2017

Our friend and talented motion artist Maxim Zhestkov launches on our partners Digital Auction Platform Sedition Art

Ahead of the launch of Maxim Zhestkov’s first digital edition on Sedition, Elements, this October 2017, they interviewed the visual and motion graphic artist from his studio in Russia to discuss his surreal animations, his approach to his own work and its subsequent reception.

Read it on Sedition

Elements is an experimental video work by Maxim Zhestkov, which explores nature, physics, art and love through digitally animated ‘particles’ or ‘elements’. More than two billion particles, governed by tensions and forces influenced by those occurring in nature were used to replicate the motion of collective behaviour. As well as patterns of motion, the particles tell stories and evince emotional responses.

@zhestkov

The film is a trial by the artist to explore the idea that everything around us and inside us is made from simple elements or blocks, which can be arranged in complex relationships and become compound structures. It demonstrates that there is a relationship between the tiny and individual, and the enormous and multiple. The ideas the work explores brings together emotions, behaviours, thought processes, relationships, life, planets and the universe.

For the 6th edition in a row, OFFF Mexico has amazed us once again with their Main titles created by the talented Framestore! A storytelling piece filled with wonders. Framestore’s Design Studio once again demonstrated its prowess in title design in the crafting of the main OFFF CDMX title sequence, showcased in Mexico City on Saturday 7 October. Design Directors Stephen Goalby and Anthony Gibbs presented the work to the OFFF audience, speaking of the journey taken by the team to reach the finished sequence. Sharon Lock, Head of Design Studio and Creative Director, of the work: "Creating the OFFF CDMX titles has been such an incredible and challenging experience for us all, and I'd like to thank Hector Ayuso for the opportunity to be part of such an iconic event. I'm really humbled that a complete indulgence of everything I love has been pulled together into a single piece of work by such a talented team of artists. The team has learnt so much in such a short space of time, and it is testament to their dedication and commitment, working above and beyond in their own time, that we've managed to create such a beautiful sequence. ELYTRE - A permanent installation by Yannick Jacquet

October 04, 2017 by Arseny Vesnin in Digital Art, Photography, France, Motioncollector, 2017

It took 3 years for artist Yannick Jacquet to create Élytre, a forty metres long generative work on display at the foot of the the Alexandre III bridge in Paris. The piece was commissioned as a permanent design feature for Le Flow, a floating building moored along the new pedestrian area on the banks of the Seine.

Yannick Jacquet drew inspiration from the dark mass of the barge between the sky and the river to fine-tune his response to the immediate surroundings, calling on the instability and permanence of the flowing water, the infinitely nuanced shifts of light, and the interplay of transparencies between its large plate-glass windows and the glass dome of the Grand Palais just across the water. Drawing on the barge’s organic, cocoon-like architecture, he came up with a highly sensitive, reactive work in the form of an installation that reverses the overall structural inertia of the barge’s four hundred tons of steel, as if echoing Reyner Banham’s principle of regenerative architecture. The installation is linked up to a battery of sensors so that it varies according to the time of year, season, atmospheric pressure, wind speed, temperature, and so on. It is in a constant state of flux, permanently subject to imperceptible shifts.

Elytre, a permanent generative work by Yannick Jacquet Alexander III bridge, Paris It has taken the Franco-Swiss artist and videographer Yannick Jacquet three years to create Élytre, a forty-metre-long generative work on display at the foot of the the Alexandre III bridge in Paris. Drawing on the barge's organic, cocoon-like architecture, he came up with a highly sensitive, reactive work in the form of an installation that reverses the overall structural inertia of the barge's four hundred tons of steel, as if echoing Reyner Banham's principle of regenerative architecture. The installation is linked up to a battery of sensors so that it varies according to the time of year, season, atmospheric pressure, wind speed, temperature, and so on. It is in a constant state of flux, permanently subject to imperceptible shifts. As a generative work, it has its own dedicated, custom made software programme and required the artist to work closely with a team of specialists in engineering, craft manufacture, electronics, programming, and architecture. As night falls, the work softly rises up into the surrounding cityscape. The impression on the viewer's retinas is deep and lasting. The colourful stimuli of elements emerging and fading seem to mirror the shimmering river and foliage and mimic the circadian rhythm of breathing. The artist also devoted considerable research to the issue of colour. A metal mesh with its own unique structure is fastened over the cladding from the roof to the hull, creating a pointillist effect by means of an infinite palette of pixels. The material resists the quantity of light and contrast: the artist has sought to create nuances and shadings of colour by pushing LEDs beyond their usual capacities. Yannick Jacquet explains that the installation is part of a broader project exploring cycles and our relationship with time. The work is designed less as an invitation to a journey as an order to slow down. To take the time for contemplation. Polka: Purveyor of Dots by Sky Pie

September 21, 2017 by Arseny Vesnin in Advertising, Motioncollector, Portfolios, 2017

The "Polka" film was born out of a shared interest to investigate the creative process of Sky Pie team with the designers at Refinery 43.

“Our aim was to explore the hazy origins of an idea, and the trials and tribulations that one must endure to find out what’s on the other side. We were expecting to make a process film. In a case of life imitating art, we instead ended up making a pink-fringed tale of polka dots.”

Ultimately Polka’s journey has very little to do with the pattern that vexes her, she must push past her own narrow world views and envision another world altogether. Or as the Lorax puts it, “It's not about what it is, it’s about what it can become”.

Polka, the eccentric visionary designer who introduced the world to the polka dot, finds her legacy in jeopardy when dots are declared ‘dead’ by the industry digest. She must evolve to survive, but breaking free of her circular empire is no simple task. To prevail, she must rise above all that she knows and see the world from a different point of view. Elements by Maxim Zhestkov

September 04, 2017 by Arseny Vesnin in Motioncollector, Portfolios, Russia, 2017

Elements, an experimental art film by Maxim Zhestkov, follows more than two billion black and white spheres through a series of experiments within several enclosed spaces. Throughout the film the particles swarm through different white rooms, each labeled with subtle wall text that broadly defines the physics of each animation such as flow, diffusion, and pressure. Set to a score of hauntingly hollow tones, Elements is intended to express laws of nature and mathematics, visually representing the composition of particles found in each of us.

“The film is a trial to explore the idea that everything around us and inside us is made from simple elements or blocks which can be arranged in complex relationships and become compound structures. We could project this idea into emotions, behaviours, thought processes, relationships, life, planets and the universe.”
