Insta Novels by New York Public Library

NYPL comes with a pioneer initiative to use Instagram Stories as a visual storytelling for a book. Baked by Mother Agency and talented artists and illustrators they created a brand new Insta Novels

The series kicks off this week with the Instagram story release of Lewis Carroll’s beloved Alice in Wonderland, with illustrations by designer Magoz (@magoz).

In the coming months, look for two other literary works that will be released on the Library's Instagram account: "The Yellow Wallpaper," a short story by Charlotte Perkins Gilman illustrated by Buck (@buck_design) and The Metamorphosis, a novella by Franz Kafka illustrated by César Pelizer (@cesarpelizer).

Dubbed “Insta Novels,” each piece has been chosen for their highly visual nature. To increase the project’s reach, designers and artists with large Instagram followings have been tapped to create these digital novels, - via Artnet

How it works

First, go to the Library's Instagram account (@nypl) and tap Part 1 of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland in the Highlights section, right under the bio.

Rest your thumb on lower right part of the screen to hold the page, and lift your thumb to turn the page. (The lower right thumb holder is designed to double as a flip book: if you lift your thumb and let the pages flip, you'll see an animation.)

As more stories are added, the NYPL Instagram account's Highlights will turn into a digital bookshelf.

Sketchar App: Augmented Art Assistant

Imagine you need to transfer a huge mural, or copy your digital sketch to a paper. Surely you will find the way to do it, but it won't be that fast and satisfying as using Augmented Reality technology brought you by Sketchar App. Brought up by russian-speaking team in Lithuania Sketchar is the second (Russian built) application that recently won the Webby Award best known as "Web Oscar" (first app was Glitche)

SketchAR is a fully-fledged tool for teaching drawing using augmented reality, machine learning, and neural networks.  The app puts virtual images on paper to let you trace drawings from your phone.

Weird Type AR Application

Zach Lieberman and Molmol Kuo’s AR app Weird Type lets you paint with type in space. 

Zach is an American artist and computer programmer whose daily sketches with code have earned him an impressive following on social media. Together with his partner Molmol they have released Weird Type – an iOS AR app that lets you draw with typography in 3D space.

An app that promises to boost your creativity through art practices

A creative duo of Aleksei Ivanovsky and Andrei Keske are launching a new app – w1d1, that has a very specific and at the same time very abstract promise – to make  you more creative.

Based somewhere in between London, Moscow and Tbilisi, the team is trying to create an environment, that would help you make creative acts – the main currency of the app. The creators of the app have worked extensively together, and, as they say, saw how transformative the creative activities can be with their own eyes.

The central idea is very simple – you get one task a day, the task challenges your creative skills, rather then actual skills of drawing or photography, and you do it in a group so as to see how other people react the the same challenge.

In a faraway Estonian camp for teenagers, they did exactly what they are trying to replicate in the mobile environment – give a person a daily creative task, and a team of like minded people to do it with. «I saw how a shy teenager, that was mumbling something about how she’s not cut of for this and how uncreative and uninteresting she is, was transformed in a matter of weeks into a self confident artistic being, who has shot a dozen short films, put up a theatre play and made a contemporary art installation» – says Andrei – «That is exactly the process we tried to replicate in our app – to make you feel empowered by creating»

Both coming from Russia, and having had an extensive career together, they treat the very act of creating an app as an art project. «The whole process is very poetic – says Aleksei, – we come up with new ideas daily and go around in circles building upon each others’ concept, the shared history allows us to do it almost without saying a word. This weird blend of technical and design skill that we both possess and multiply in each other  is probably the main driving force behind the app, without that we would be just making another boring social network, but it feels that we can achieve something much more artistic with this one.»

Actually the two have pulled off just that some time ago – they shook up the russian media landscape with the revolutionary w-o-s.ru project, that became the most experimental media platform ever to exist in russian internet. Having closed in 2015, it still has a surprising influence how the field of russian new media looks.

Already a year into the process of building the app, Aleksei found the very same concept behind it in the works of Russian literary scholar Viktor Shklovsky – an important underground figure of early XX century.

Shkovsky writes in his early book “Art as technique” :  ”Habitualization devours work, clothes, furniture, one's wife, and the fear of war. "If the whole complex lives of many people go on unconsciously, then such lives are as if they had never been." And art exists that one may recover the sensation of life; it exists to make one feel things, to make the stone stony. The purpose of art is to impart the sensation of things as they are perceived and no tas they are known.

The technique of art is to make objects "unfamiliar," to make forms difficult, to increase the difficulty and length of perception because the process of perception is an aesthetic end in itself and must be prolonged. Art is a way of experiencing the artfulness of an object: the object is not important…”

“When I read that, I was astonished it felt like there’s this powerful connection between centuries, that the idea at the base of the app, that we need art to help us defamiliarize our lives for us, to make the colors more vivid and emotions more noticeable is not my random quirk of mind, but a very grounded centuries old idea, we are just trying to mold it into a new form, this time – an app.”

The test version is already available at w1d1.com and the international public launched is to be announced in mid 2019.

AKQA – The Snow Fox

Just in time for this holiday season, AKQA launched The Snow Fox – a children’s story that comes to life by voice.

The Snow Fox is a wintry tale of a young child who adventures through the forest with a newfound furry friend in search of his/her mother. But this is no ordinary story. The Snow Fox is powered by words. As the child reads, the story animates. When a sentence is finished, the story automatically transitions to the next scene. Sticker.Place Collaboration for iMessage

There is nothing new using and creating custom stickers in mobile chat applications. The latest and greatest addition to the family of such applications and development platform was done by Apple few days ago. After their massive release of iOS 10, the iMessage, at last, got its own stickers (that are applications themselves).

In a matter of a day I was contacted by team behind Stickers.Place collaboration. Guys invited talented illustrators to create stickers packs for iMessage and created a platform where any illustrator can join, create and share the best emotional stickers with audience.

Prisma - Artificial Intellect Art Application

Prisma AI App is a new addition to kicking Russian-built family of great mobile applications that merely started from Glitché and SLMMSK (Vladimir Shreyder, promoted by me at Digitized14 conf) that changed the canvas of digital contemporary art and even influenced the showbiz. Later Facebook bought another speedy Russian filter app MSQRD (Nick Davydov) that rocketed in app store in a matter of month. Few days ago a new wave of Instagram artistic make overs started to appear by the tag #prisma

Creation of a Russian team lead by Aleksey Moiseenkov Prisma transforms your photos into artworks using the styles of famous artists: Van Gogh, Picasso, Levitan, as well as world famous ornaments and patterns. INKS Game App - Pinball of Watercolours

For their latest video game INKS, London-based State of Play Games have created a new spin on classic pinball by turning the background of a pinball game into a piece of interactive art. As the ball traverses the course, the bright lights and clanking sounds of traditional pinball are replaced with pockets of watercolor paint that explode into flourishes. The ball in turn leaves trails of color as you solve each level.

“Inspired by artists like Miro, Matisse, Jackson Pollock and Bridget Riley, each table becomes a unique work of art in its own right, sculpted by the player as they fire an ink covered ball around the canvas. The player is encouraged to share their final work of art on social media with the iOS share function. They can even print them out if they like – with the story of their perfect game literally drawn on the canvas in front of them, something to be proud of and share.”

Magnus app: "shazam" for the art world

Brand new app, Magnus, (that works in NYC only now) is being toted as the Shazam of the art world.  Simple and to-the-point, the Magnus user only needs to point their smartphone at an artwork seen in a gallery, and instantly a plethora of information becomes available on their device. Title, artist name, medium, and dimensions are listed, allowing even uninitiated art viewer to understand to basic components of the work. Perhaps most importantly, Magnus also shows the latest market price of the work, whether this is the figure fetched at auction or if it is the gallery’s current asking price for the work.

The brain behind Magnus is 31-year-old German art entrepreneur Magnus Resch, best known for co-founding Larry’s List, a database of contemporary art collectors, and for his brutally honest literary exposé on gallery inefficiency, Management of Galleries.

Alto's Adventure - The Ultimate Snowboard Mobile Game

Alto’s Adventure is such an immersive experience, it’s hard to believe it’s being channeled through a mobile-sized screen. Its beauty is in the details: the tiny shadow reflected in the snow as you leap into the air for a backflip, the birds flying away in fear as you tear down a hill, the satisfying sound of your board pressing down on the snow. Overhead, the sky is constantly shifting, drenching you in darkness and rain during a midnight storm, then offering solace a few moments later with the soft, rosy hues of dawn...

The app was built by Ryan Cash and Jordan Rosenberg, the founders of the Toronto-based software studio Snowman, with UK illustrator and developer Harry Nesbitt.

Last Voyage Game

Inspired (or not) by the most beautiful game Monument Valley guys from SEMIDOME released the LAST VOYAGE. A cinematic experience inspired by science-fiction movies, each chapter is visually unique and explores an original concept with completely new game mechanics. Go through psychedelic portals, explore grand minimal forms, solve mind-bending puzzles or race against the stars. While these chapters form a continuous narrative, the players are constantly surprised with new ways to interact as they seamlessly transition from one chapter to another.

It's been a while since I spoke about Russian-born Glitche App at Digitized Festival this September in Athens. Started as a fun in 2013 the Glitche app reached the top of App Store in a few months, right after celebrities and photographers like Nicola Formichetti (Diesel) or Nick Knight (Showstudio) showed the world a new tool that saves a lot of efforts and money to bring a wow-effect. Basically the app give you an opportunity to become a contemporary artist just by distorting your photos with an awesome set of filters and glitch-hacks. After the release of the second version app rocked with a new features and filters like Emoji-art (I still remember the joy of ASCII-Art Christmas Cards my dad did in later 80ss for me). We didn't wait to long for a clever guy using Glitche App to create epic fan art over famous music covers. So he did it very well and buzz the social web with his artworks available on Twitter @emojiartworks. Find the cover you like or create and share your own Glitch Art using the app now.
