50 Books / 50 Covers

"Established in 1923 by the American Institute of Graphic Arts as "Fifty Books,” the 50 Books | 50 Covers competition is now the longest continually running design competition in the United States. Since 2011, Design Observer has hosted it. And in 2015, for the first time, we are publishing a book and mounting an exhibition to commemorate the competition winners of 2014, narrowed down from a field of 500 entries from fourteen countries."

For now, they are producing the ultimate “book of books” to catalog the winners of this year’s 50 | 50 competition using a crowd-sourcing donation on Kickstarter Page.

Architectural Drawing by Minty Sainsbury

Having a 2-years experience in architectural studies I can't pass by the portfolio of a talented pencil artist Minty Sainsbury (Instagram). Her latest series of "Seen Through Masterpieces" makes us think of how far did the urban development ruin the historical city sightseens wherever it is in London or Saint-Petersburg.

For fifteen years in a row, we've gathered the biggest community of restless creatures in Latin America in a stadium. Thousands of designers, photographers, publicists, architects, anthropologists, design-inquisitors, illustrators and musicians get together to think, debate and celebrate. This ritual has become a means of operation, a considered action, a form of joy. The connexion to the little darling is unavoidable. But what is design's little darling? Inspiration? A line on a blank sheet? A geometric shape? The reticule? Composition?

We are surrounded by little darlings which help us believe in what we do; confidence, and structure our plans; projection. Little muses that constantly whisper in our ear the steps we must take; those moments plagued with ideas, lights, inspirations.

The classic crossroad of design after the starting point; the Problem. And above it all, her, with her steps floating over neurons; the Solution, dressed in graphite, nodes or ink scattered on a sketch book. And this year, we're gonna celebrate her sweet 15!

Art of Niharika Hukku

“For me, to create form and function out of what is essentially mud was magical,” says Sydney-based artist Niharika Hukku (@niharikahukku). With a background in painting, Niharika started out her career as a commercial illustrator, but later decided to pivot into the field of pottery making. “I always felt a pull towards ceramics,” Niharika says. “I wanted to do something that was personal and organic.” via Instagram Blog

Art of Jeremy Miranda

"Jeremy Miranda’s work is calming, like the divergent directions of both halves of an overclocked brain spontaneously aligning, spectrum of possibility crystallizing poignantly, the chaos of the wider world and the general entropy of everyday life suddenly glowing, comforting, an austere blanket, warm."

Art of Marco Battaglini

Marco Battaglini pastiches together bits of Renaissance art with graffiti and other elements of modern pop — not unlike the divine versus the vulgar — in his digital paintings. By mashing together opposing visual traditions, the Italian artist (living in Costa Rica) challenges the viewer to contemplate a variety of topics: cultural democratization, the evolution of knowledge and information, and what he calls our 'patchwork culture.'

Coffee Paintings by Ghidaq al-Nizar

Al-Nizar calls his art #zerowastecoffee because he usually paints it with what’s left of his morning coffee, making sure that none of it, not even the coffee grinds, goes to waste. He also creates latte foam art, which you can check out on his Instagram and Facebook.

Macro art by Rómulo Celdrán

Artist Rómulo Celdrán turns everyday objects into oversized sculptures for his series 'Macro'. That is not a new concept in terms of postmodernism sculpture but he does it with a great passion to details and as he said "I believe there is something magic in the world of scales. There is a kind of emotional memory that invites us to feel the relationship with the Macro objects as if it were a game"
