Master of illusions Alex Chinneck’s latest mind-boggling public art installation is on show in what must surely be the spiritual home of his craft; one of the busiest piazzas in London and its theatrical hub. His floating building follows on from a sliding house, upside down house and many other puzzling optical illusions. Called Take my lightning but don’t steal my thunder, Alex says: “The titles are born from a kind of daydreaming. Everything we do now is extremely planned and co-ordinated. And I don’t feel like an artist anymore. A title is a rare opportunity to do something which feels slightly bohemian!”
As for the thinking behind Take my lightning but don’t steal my thunder, Alex muses that “there are things which always come together but are always slightly apart.” In terms of the building itself, “the shape of the crack was reminiscent of the lightning bolt. It’s a very cataclysmic scene.”

"At the INSIDE World Festival of Interiors, Joyce Wang‘s MOTT32 bar and restaurant in Hong Kong was officially named the best interior space of 2014. Located in a former storage facility, which reportedly once housed expensive family heirlooms for wealthy Chinese immigrants, MOTT32 is best described as an atmospheric underworld dining experience. Taking inspiration from the heritage of the site, the restaurant is filled with forgotten heirlooms, Chinese propaganda and industrial materials doubling as furniture and light fittings. Located underground, with no natural light, Joyce Wang embraced the constraints of the venue and used them to create a theatrical and exclusive experience. Delicate detailing was combined with raw materials, such as concrete and metals, to create an overall bold design that sees Western and Eastern influences come together." via Highsnobiety

The video below is not about the design itself but about the power of a raw marble - the beautiful material born for art and architecture. In his short movie Yuri Ancarani extracts a striking portrait of marble. “Marble quarries are places so unbelievable and striking, they almost feel like they are big theaters or sets,” says Yuri Ancarani, the filmmaker behind today’s excerpt from the documentary, Il Capo (The Chief), which follows a quarry boss as he guides his men through the extraction process, using a silent language of gesture and sign

A few years ago the folks at Denver, Colorado-based Magpul gave us the Ronin concept bike, based on the American-built Buell 1125R. As rarely happens with concepts from smaller shops, Magpul is turning the Ronin into a limited edition production bike.
In keeping with its namesake, Magpul is only producing 47 Ronin bikes, one for each of the 47 Ronin Warriors from Japanese lore. Additionally, each bike will have one of the warriors’ names engraved on it, and on the bike’s toolkit. The bikes will be released in staggered series pricing out around the $40k USD mark. The earlier releases will be slightly less expensive, as the final five will each be a completely bespoke design. For more information head over to the bike’s official website.

Our interior editor Anna promised us to make a little coverage of London Design Festival. Meanwhile we found an interesting installation of Dan Tobin Smith. Entitled 'The First Law of Kipple' in reference to Phillip K Dick's 1968 novel 'Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep'—that later went on to inspire Blade Runner—the installation features thousands upon thousands of objects swamping the studio on every flat surface, arranged (with great appeal to the OCD-inclined) in a stunning spectrum of colours. Much like the fictional post-apocalyptic world that is haunted by plastic 'kipple,' the objects swarm all throughout the exhibition space—following viewers up stairs and into the toilet cubicle. Barcelona-based studio Bel & Bel wanted to merge two of their favorite things, Vespa scooters and Segways. Thus, they created the Vespa Segway. Making the popular self-balancing personal vehicle look like a Vespa, it definitely captures the hearts of Vespa lovers who want to take it just a little slower.

Kit King is a self-taught artist born and raised in a small town in Ontario, Canada. Kit's work tends to fall on the macabre side. With a focus on detail and rich value and colour palette. Her works have a darker edge to them while still maintaining a subtle beauty. "I was raised with a non fear of death and the unknown. With unrestrained curiosity and a nurtured creativity. I think that's reflected in my art." She works full time as an artist now.

Highsnobiety Magazine visited menswear label studio I LOVE UGLY in terms of their Highsnobiety Visits. We are pretty jealous of them having the experience to meet people of the label and take awesome photos of their space. "Based in Mount Eden, New Zealand, the primarily black space has been home to ILU for three and a half years and perfectly reflects the feel and style of the brand – the black walls are also present throughout all their flagship stores. Originally the building was used as a shared creative space, housing several different artists and other creative agencies. To encourage collaboration, the workspace is fairly open in an effort to promote the sharing of ideas. However, the design and marketing departments are segregated from the rest of the business, and every month or two they switch everything around to promote fresh thinking."
