Olympic Pinup Calendar 2014

Russian officials are going crazy next year, but let's leave all politics and take a look at the new amateur Olympic Pinup Calendar created by Andrew Tarusov (check his previous work "Apocalypse Tomorrow Calendar"). The new Calendar is a kind of humorous answer for the whole political situation around upcoming Winter Games. I won't translate mottos from each page, so please enjoy the Soviet aesthetic graphics below. If you read Russian you can order print version on https://boomstarter.ru/projects/tarusov/pechat_sportivnogo_kalendarya_na_2014_g

An Instagram Short Film

Some of you might remember the first ever video created with Instagram "The Plastics Revolution – Invasión" and some of you who are curious enough to follow TED speeches might remember Blaise Aguera y Arcas speaking about Photosynth - a photo-visualiser using a crowd-sourcing photography from sources like Flickr. Here is a merge of both ideas. As Instagram has its own engine to give access to photos so French director Thomas Jullien made each image a little less ordinary, by weaving hundreds of these similar images together to create a stop-motion video. Jullien aimed to “create structure out of chaos”, and he does so beautifully with 852 different pictures from 852 Instagram users.

Pirelli 2014 Calendar by ... Helmut Newton

Yes, by Helmut Newton and you are not reading Designcollector Back to the Future digest. To celebrate the 50th anniversary of its annual calendar, tire company Pirelli has made the decision to release a set of vintage Helmut Newton portraits from 1986 for its 2014 calendar. The calendar will feature 12 black and white never-before-seen photographs shot on location in Monte Carlo and Chianti. According to The Cut, Newton had to abandon the 1986 shoot due to personal issues, and the photos were stored in the Pirelli archives until earlier this year.

The Void

Audiovisual installation “Void” created by Saint-Petersburg based collective Tundra is an attempt to visualize the idea of emptiness.Emptiness here is regarded not as an absence of everything, but as an initial state when anything can appear. To see how dark room turns into the Big Bang epicenter a visitor should become “empty”. Every move and sound, captured by sensitive equipment, stops the 360 degrees audiovisual flow around. Mirrored Infinity Rooms by Yayoi Kusama

In Infinity Mirrored Room installation by Yayoi Kusama ( 'I Who Have Arrived In Heaven' Exhibition at David Zwirner Art Gallery ), hundreds of multicoloured LED lights, suspended at different heights and dangling from floor to ceiling, transform a room into what feels like eternity. The cube-shaped, mirror-paneled room has a shallow reflecting pool as its floor and the lights flicker on and off in a strobe-like effect.

The Rapid Eye

Menno Fokma and Floris Vos (FLORIS+MENNO) directed a dark short movie "The Rapid Eye"."The Rapid Eye is a short experimental art & fashion film which is born from the personal need to experiment with a fragmented way of storytelling, practical effects, aesthetics and evoking emotions on a subconscious level. We started the film by experimenting and recording a lot of different scenes we had in mind. Mostly by just the 2 of us. We paid attention to an intuitive way of working. During the process we connected the dots and developed our script into something bigger. With limited budget we managed to arrange locations and a great crew to shoot the spine of the film. We worked together with the amazing team from Box Of Toys Audio. They recorded vocals with a Scandinavian Yojk singer, Juhán Niila Stålka, and custom samples on the HMS Belfast warship in London."

Mark Rubenstein

"LA-based Mark Rubenstein has been actively taking photographs for 13 years now, creating shots that are aesthetically simple, yet still communicate a very specific vision to the audience. In his past works, as well as in his latest book project Gone by Dawn, the viewer may notice an ongoing theme—naked chicks. But though they're always a crowd-pleasing subject, it's with great subtlety that Rubenstein captures these vulnerable moments, and like with all art, you have to look beyond the surface to find the meaning within." Hercules XIII tablet stand by Scott Eaton

You might have seen recent buzz about Lady Gaga's life-size sculpture made in collaboration of Scott Eaton and Jeff Koons. Creepy but that's pop culture. Let's switch to the latest work of Scott - Hercules XIII tablet stand - the second of its type after "The Venus of Cupertino". It features oversized Hercules (hence we call oatmeal in Russia by this greek name of the famous half-god) holding any tablet with an outstanding grace. If you like them both you will definitely appreciate their collide in Venus Lamp shown below :)
