Treasures from the Wreck of the Unbelievable: Damien Hirst

Palazzo Grassi
April 07, 2017 by Arseny Vesnin in Art, Italy, United Kingdom, Sculpture, 2017

"In 2008 the wreck of a treasure ship called the Apistos (meaning “the Unbelievable”) was found on the seabed off east Africa. It sank about 2,000 years ago. Its unique cargo of global artefacts, assembled by a freed slave called Cif Amotan II, have spent two millennia undergoing a “sea change” straight out of Shakespeare’s Tempest, becoming wrapped in coloured corals and bizarre crustacean growths - until the archaeologists who found this sunken marvel asked Hirst to use his millions to help recover it."

"If you believe that, you’ll believe anything. The curators who told this bit of hokum straightfaced at the start of the press view deserve bonuses, if Hirst has not yet bankrupted himself creating this luxury masterpiece. " The Guardian

The elaborate backstory is slightly undercut by the fact that the fake relics include not just historical references, but the faces of Pharrell, Kate Moss, Rihanna, and Die Antwoord singer YoLandi Visser, not to mention Mickey Mouse.

From Sunday 9 April, 2017, Palazzo Grassi and Punta della Dogana present "Treasures from the Wreck of the Unbelievable", a new project by British artist Damien Hirst that will run across both venues. Da domenica 9 aprile 2017 Palazzo Grassi e Punta della Dogana presentano "Treasures from the Wreck of the Unbelievable", un progetto inedito dell'artista britannico Damien Hirst che coinvolge entrambe le sedi.

StolenForm Ceramics

March 31, 2017 by Arseny Vesnin in Design, Portfolios, United Kingdom, 2017

StolenForm is a concept brand that specialises in repurposing industrialised objects, transforming them into ceramic home accessories and giftware products.

Christian Marsden is the designer-maker behind StolenForm and has long been inspired by the urban environment. Years spent journeying through London’s streets led him to notice afresh the ubiquitous and foundational features of the city that are so often overlooked: a brick, a manhole cover over a drain or a piece of piping could be reclaimed and elevated to a new level of function and aesthetic value.

March 27, 2017 by Arseny Vesnin in Digital Art, Motioncollector, United Kingdom, 2017

"Alan Turing is the inspiration for a study of human and artificial intelligence by art and design group United Visual Artists"

"In the third and final episode of our Illuminating series, a trilogy of films showcasing a range of innovative installations by London-based art and design group UVA, co-founder Matt Clark explores the grey area between the natural and the technological."

United Visual Artists reflect on human and artificial intelligence in a project inspired by Alan Turing. Read more on NOWNESS - http://bit.ly/2o8EKZr

"With a focus on UVA's permanent light installation, Message From the Unseen World—a memorial to pioneering British codebreaker and computer scientist Alan Turing, set under a bridge in London—this episode ultimately explores the deeper enigma of being human."

Karl Dmitri Bishop Photography

March 24, 2017 by Arseny Vesnin in Portfolios, Photography, United Kingdom, 2017

"Cambridge-based photographer Karl Dmitri Bishop creates surreal, somewhat mystical images that seem to come straight from another planet. His shots are highly constructed and processed, sometimes they feel rather like paintings then photos with an intangible quality of otherworldliness. With an ever growing audience, Dmitri Bishop leaves a sense of wonder and mystery with his magical work."

Boys Don’t Cry by Zak Group

March 13, 2017 by Arseny Vesnin in Agencies, Branding, Graphic Design, United Kingdom, 2017

Zak Group was commissioned to design a bespoke type treatment for Frank Ocean’s magazine Boys Don’t Cry and to design the masthead.

Following its long-awaited public release Frank Ocean published the foil-wrapped magazine Boys Don’t Cry which included a special release of the album Blonde. The magazine, featuring three alternate covers, was launched at four pop-up newsstands in Chicago, Los Angeles, London, and New York on Saturday, 20 August 2016. The compendium of poetry, interviews, essays and photography includes contributions from Kanye West, Wolfgang Tillmans, Tyrone Lebon, Viviane Sassen and Tom Sachs among others.

The lettering of the hand-distorted masthead was made by scanning originals on a large-format scanner. The technique of printing, capturing and manipulating original artwork references historical works by artists such as Bob Cobbing or experiments made in the late 60s with the then-new photocopy technology.

Zhuang Hong Yi Art

The Unit London
March 09, 2017 by Arseny Vesnin in Art, China, Netherlands, Portfolios, 2017, United Kingdom

Zhuang Hong Yi can best be described as a Chinese, contemporary artist who has impressed audiences in different countries by his unique style in his many pieces of modern art. His works represent beauty, sophistication and a high level of perfection with a clear presence of Chinese influence represented in his use of colours, themes, shapes and materials that touch the heart.

Unit London is incredibly excited to announce the premier UK Solo exhibition of renowned Chinese artist, Zhuang Hong Yi, in September 2015. This landmark exhibition comprises brand new works from Yi's Roterdam and Beijing studios, offering perhaps the most compelling and gripping exhibition of his work to date.

Hong Yi’s concern with environmental issues is reflected in his repetitive use of floral patterns, highlighting the increasing urbanisation of his home country, the ferocious plundering of natural resources and the depopulation of the rural environment.

24 March - 14 April, The Unit London Gallery

Following the success of his first London exhibition in 2015, RAW  at the Unit London - Zhuang Hong Yi returns to the gallery with RAW II offering another chance to witness this artist’s captivating and iridescent works.

February 27, 2017 by Arseny Vesnin in Digital Art, United Kingdom, Portfolios, 2017

"Predominantly focusing on the intricate details that go unnoticed in everyday life, Tishk Barzanji unveils an immersive exploration of space and colour, delving into the topics of digital art, graphic design and photography, in turn transforming the mundane into the extraordinary. "

"Channeling Mondrian, Magritte and Ken Price as major influences due to their iconic consideration of colour and juxtaposition, Barzanji creates surreal digital landscapes that capture his curiosity regarding the structure, diversity of cultures and atmosphere that consume his new home environment, altering perceptions along the way." text Alice Harrison via People of Print

The Wedgwood by Lee Broom collection

February 23, 2017 by Arseny Vesnin in Design, United Kingdom, Portfolios, 2017

"To celebrate ten years in business, London-based designer Lee Broom has collaborated with British heritage brand Wedgwood on a collection of vases and bowls, pictured below"

"The four vessels, launching this month in a limited edition of 15, have been made in classic Jasperware at Wedgwood’s Stoke-on-Trent factory. Broom drew inspiration from the company’s 250-year-old archives for his pieces, including the 18th century ‘Panther’ vase with its black and white stripes. Treated to glossy finishes and bold splashes of colour, the pieces feel original and new." - text Becky Sunshine for Wallpaper*

Photo: Tom Nicholson

“I’ve been working with Wedgwood on this for a couple of years. I don’t often do collaborations, but this felt right. I’m so happy with the connection between our two brands: the Britishness of it all, one contemporary, one heritage, with references to historical manufacturing.”

Hi [insert client name here], We think we're nearly there on this. It’d be great to get your thoughts/comments and of course, let us know if you spot anything obviously wrong. Best, Mainframe - This was an experimental film put together simply as an opportunity to have a play in-between projects. After much deliberation we set ourselves a brief to create a collection of scenarios subverting the physical properties of...anything. It made for some interesting comments along the way. “That egg’s not bouncy enough, the cloth coming out of the tap needs to feel more like water, the bowling ball needs to feel heavier as it floats off…”. We suddenly realised we were playing our own client (hence the in-joke above) This is FauxPhysics_09_FINAL_V16_ForApproval_FINAL_withAudio_FINAL_1.mov ;·) We've started lots of these projects over the years. This rare creature is one that's finally found its way out of the studio. And no, it wasn’t at all annoying to see this peach https://vimeo.com/191444383 appear on Vimeo half way through the process. ◔_◔ All produced in Maya 2017, rendered in Vray and composited in After Effects. CLIENT: KISS TV CONCEPT/DESIGN/ANIMATION: Mainframe ART DIRECTOR: Daniel Wood @ KISS TV SOUND: Shookz Mainframe were recently invited by Box Plus Network to create a series of idents for their music channel Kiss TV. With Kiss being at the forefront of Music TV in the U.K. the brief for the idents was to created something innovative, visually stunning and different to anything else on UK TV screens. We pushed the boundaries in terms of look and feel with these idents. Spending large amounts of time doing research and development, particularly in new forms of procedural animation, gave us tools we needed to create something truly original. The Box Plus team were particularly supportive of this experimental way of working and hopefully the results are worth the effort everyone put into the project. There are four main strands that pay homage to the synergy between fashion and music, each intertwined with a distinctive party mood: bling, club, pop and urban that also reflect the range of the channel’s music policy. The brand is taken into an abstract, intergalactic world, on a journey of high energy, form and colour. ‘Bling’ brings the luxe of hip hop and glam pop with reflective, glittering, metallic textures and fluid, melding animations. ‘Club’ embodies the energy of house and techno, glowing lights and lasers, and repetitive beating movements. ‘Pop’ provides imagery derived from pop funk and pop rap, colourful, vibrant hues, and frenetic, bold animations. Finally, ‘urban’ ident draws inspiration from garage and grime, with dark, moody tones lit up with molten lava and animated at an explosive pace. Within the animations, two objects touch - representing a ‘kiss’ - to create a chain reaction culminating in a distinctive logo resolve. The faceted and folding mechanic is used as a constant to create a familiar thread across the four distinct looks - showcasing four facets of the one channel. Specially composed tracks by Nottingham Bass DJ/producer Shookz - one of the Midlands’ most diverse and exciting musical talents - adds multi-dimensional layers to the four idents. Inspiration for these tracks has come from youth production workshops in Mansfield, Shookz’s remix work, and his immersion in a range of sub-genres of electronic dance music.

February 06, 2017 by Arseny Vesnin in Digital Art, Art, United Kingdom, 2017

Designcollector premieres a fresh issue from digital art platform and net auction Sedition. Started 5 years ago the new platform quickly grown as a leading place to buy and sell digital pieces of famous and new-coming artists. This a unique place were you can eventually own Damien Hirst or Tracey Emin for less then a 100$, worth to mention you can trade it back by operating solely inside the platform environment.

Tracey Emin, You Touch My Soul

To celebrate the nightmare of all introverts and lonely hearts - the upcoming St Valentines, Sedition asked us to find 14 easy ways to say that 3 complicated words "I Love You" and of course with art. By giving a digital art you can surprise your mom, fellow, partner, lover, ex or even a dog with a new way you treat them. Of course there is no heavy burden to explain the meaning behind a contemporary piece you selected for this case. Love needs no explanation. Art neither.
