Insta Novels by New York Public Library

August 23, 2018 by Arseny Vesnin in Mobile Applications, Instagram, Illustration, 2018

NYPL comes with a pioneer initiative to use Instagram Stories as a visual storytelling for a book. Baked by Mother Agency and talented artists and illustrators they created a brand new Insta Novels

“Instagram unknowingly created the perfect bookshelf for this new kind of online novel. From the way you turn the pages, to where you rest your thumb while reading, the experience is already unmistakably like reading a paperback novel. We have to promote the value of reading, especially with today’s threats to American system of education.”
— Corinna Falusi, Mother’s partner, CCO

The series kicks off this week with the Instagram story release of Lewis Carroll’s beloved Alice in Wonderland, with illustrations by designer Magoz (@magoz).

In the coming months, look for two other literary works that will be released on the Library's Instagram account: "The Yellow Wallpaper," a short story by Charlotte Perkins Gilman illustrated by Buck (@buck_design) and The Metamorphosis, a novella by Franz Kafka illustrated by César Pelizer (@cesarpelizer).

Dubbed “Insta Novels,” each piece has been chosen for their highly visual nature. To increase the project’s reach, designers and artists with large Instagram followings have been tapped to create these digital novels, - via Artnet

How it works

First, go to the Library's Instagram account (@nypl) and tap Part 1 of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland in the Highlights section, right under the bio.

Rest your thumb on lower right part of the screen to hold the page, and lift your thumb to turn the page. (The lower right thumb holder is designed to double as a flip book: if you lift your thumb and let the pages flip, you'll see an animation.)

As more stories are added, the NYPL Instagram account's Highlights will turn into a digital bookshelf.

Time to revisit portfolio of Spanish self taught artist Alexander Grahovsky now showcasing his best works with Creative Debuts in London. His bubble gum paintings are rad, he offers them as prints as well, and his outlook is all about balance.

Hattie Stewart is an Artist and Illustrator based in London, UK. Although she is best known for 'doodlebombing' over influential Magazines, her tongue-in-cheek artwork moves fluidly between many creative fields including Fashion, Music and Contemporary Art.

She is about to open an exhibition of new immersive works for NOW Gallery in London’s Greenwich Peninsula this month.

Commissioned by the gallery’s cultural curator Kaia Charles, the free exhibition from May 16 to June 25 will feature large scale floor-based artwork that invites participation with Hattie’s legendary doodle bomb illustrations, references to psychedelic art from the 60s and post-modern classics like Who Framed Roger Rabbit, offering the viewer a clean break from reality.

Paintings by Esther Brown

May 01, 2018 by Arseny Vesnin in Art, Illustration, Portfolios, United Kingdom, 2018

Esther Brown is a British/South African artist and designer born and raised in Japan, currently settled and working in the UK. She completed a BA HONS in Fine Art in 2014, worked as a print designer and has won an award for her drawings.

View fullsize esther-brown2.jpg
View fullsize esther-brown1.jpg

Gleaning elements from her multicultural background, Esther’s work is based around the concepts of symmetry, beauty and Utopia. Brightly coloured birds sit on a background of patterns and golden halos, and animals are surrounded by a wreath of voluptuous flowers and butterflies. Her pieces often reflect the conflict between animals in decorative spaces and the desire for all nature to be wild and free.  Both the small fragile creatures and those creatures considered more powerful are depicted and upheld in an other-worldly utopian environment, where their beauty and uniqueness is to be celebrated.

April 27, 2018 by Arseny Vesnin in Illustration, Portfolios, USA, Australia, 2018

New York based Milan and Melbourne raised illustrator Ilya Milstein works mainly as editorial artist for clients include The New York Times, Kiehl's and Vice Media. In his recent series commissioned by the New York Times Style Magazine, Ilya recreates "New Yorkers and Their's 80s routines"

“These detailed streetscapes follow a character as she navigates the bustling and gritty New York of the era, crossing paths along the way with figures like David Wojnarowicz, Sylvia Woods and Andy Warhol”
— Ilya Milstein

The era might have been old New York’s last real gasp — a time when the very streets, dirty and unsafe as they were, seemed infused with possibility. Here, notable locals revisit their routes and routines, from lunch on the Upper East to nighttime sojourns to then-emerging neighborhoods like TriBeCa. - NYT

Mysterious Anthropomorphic Illustrations by Jenna Barton

April 20, 2018 by Arseny Vesnin in 2018, Illustration, Portfolios

"American designer and illustrator Jenna Barton combines watercolor and digital processing to create mysterious anthropomorphic scenes of dogs, foxes, deer, and other four-legged beings. These eerily rendered creatures often have blank glowing eyes which suggest the animal is possessed or hiding a deep inner world."

Illustrator Claudia Chanhoi is Redefining Femininity and Sexuality

April 03, 2018 by Arseny Vesnin in Illustration, China, Hong-Kong, Portfolios, USA, 2018

Drawing the most feminine parts of the female body as a series of dishes – isn’t that a bit over the top? Trying to fully express women’s desire for sexuality and even its symbolic form, through the tip of a pen – isn’t that a bit audacious?

Claudia Chanhoi, a Hong Kong-born and U.S.-based artist, says most of her creations feature women’s body parts but aren’t only about women’s sexual desire. They also represent the artist herself, a modern straight woman.

Andreea Robescu

March 30, 2018 by Arseny Vesnin in Fashion, Graphic Design, Illustration, Portfolios, Spain, 2018

There is no doubt that future  is female and bright, and the portfolio of Barcelona-based graphic artist Andrea Robescu you see below is a strong evidence of it. Worth to mention Andrea is a crime partner of our long-term friend Andrei Robu helping him with graphic projects on daily basis

Her art breaks the boundaries of how the body and facial features are illustrated through photography in the fashion industry and by using a more relaxed and fun way of looking at things she expressed and embraced the human sexuality in a playful and empowering way.
Bold colours and abstract shapes play a big part of Andreea’s work. She’s creating powerful visuals using everything from markers to acrylics, pencils and ink, sometimes even her bare hands making the whole process a very personal one. Her energetic illustrations attracted the eye of various global brands and publications.

"Seoul-based artist WanJim Gim illustrates the form and gesture of the human body using complex hatched layers of color and dramatic lighting. He adds intrigue to poses that could be considered traditional figure drawing studies by adding abstracted lines and watercolor washes that integrate the fragmented body parts into a larger visual field."
