Konstantin Kofta FW18 "Sophro"

April 13, 2018 by Arseny Vesnin in Design, Fashion, Portfolios, Ukraine, 2018

Kofta is the couture label specializing in the art of leather craft using futuristic techniques. Based in Kiev since 2010, Ukraine, the studio has the ability to carry out individual projects from start to finish, allowing them to be designed, developed and produced in-house. Here the bag is not just an accessory but an expression of art.

It is a melange of imagery and allegory, fusion of raw contemplations, tameless nature, deep forests, timeworn buildings and ancient architecture.

Not an Apple Smart Glasses

February 23, 2018 by Arseny Vesnin in Design, Portfolios, South Korea, 2018

Award-winning Korean industrial design student Taeyeon Kim take the shortest way to internet recognition by riding a hype of "yet not an Apple" product. His take on Smart Glasses went well and got a massive response online. The hommage for Steve Job's glasses is clear and gracefully naive while the overall "willy wonka" look&feel is pretty nice and playful

HALF&HALF Gzhel Plates

December 12, 2017 by Arseny Vesnin in Design, Portfolios, Russia, 2017

It began few years ago when Russian Design magazine AD asked 5 leading designers to come up with pilot projects to save significant local industries from dying out of ideas. We wrote about Yar Misonzhnikov reinventing Vologda lace traditions. But today we put on review the only one project went in production

That was a redesign of classic Gzhel Porcelain Ceramics by then a designer and now art-director of Strelka Institute - Anna Kulachek. In 2015 together with HALF&HALF production firm, Anna  released a small bunch of desert plates HALF&KULACHEK - the modern designs that use classical Gzhel colour motifs and geometrical patterns.

This autumn, the company decided to produce a limited supply of table version plates (27.5 cm) in two colours. Next year, the brand owners intend to continue the series with the same print, as well as produce cups, sugar bowls and other objects.

From Stick to Chandelier - Palka by Yaroslav Misonzhnikov

April 19, 2017 by Arseny Vesnin in Design, Russia, Portfolios, 2017

St. Petersburg-based Yaroslav Misonzhnikov has designed a clever way to turn those simple sockets into minimalist chandeliers. Palka, which is ‘stick’ in Russian, is a wooden system that becomes a support bracket to hold two, three, or five of those corded sockets in place to form a pendant chandelier.

"Palka" project was first shown as a system for sconces at the Stockholm Furniture Fair in 2016 but now it has been developed as a system for pendant lamps. Many people buy lamps with ceramic sockets, but then they face certain limitations during the process of installing.

Using the same module and the corresponding adapter, you can independently create a two-, three- and five-lamp pendant lamp. To fix a wire a special design has been developed: the holes for the wire are made at an angle, which allows you to bend the wire and fix it in the desired position.

The project is produced under the own brand of designer «Misonzhnikov». This constructor is available in two types of wood: oak and mahogany. Wires and bulbs are bought separately.

StolenForm Ceramics

March 31, 2017 by Arseny Vesnin in Design, Portfolios, United Kingdom, 2017

StolenForm is a concept brand that specialises in repurposing industrialised objects, transforming them into ceramic home accessories and giftware products.

Christian Marsden is the designer-maker behind StolenForm and has long been inspired by the urban environment. Years spent journeying through London’s streets led him to notice afresh the ubiquitous and foundational features of the city that are so often overlooked: a brick, a manhole cover over a drain or a piece of piping could be reclaimed and elevated to a new level of function and aesthetic value.

JAHNKOY Fashion by Maria Kazakova

March 30, 2017 by Arseny Vesnin in Fashion, Portfolios, Russia, Design, Art, 2017

"Jahnkoy" means "new spirit village" on Crimean. Jahnkoy’s work is a decisive return to craft, meaning the very hands that create and define cultures. Siberia-born, the New York-based visual artist Maria Kazakova explores textiles and ancient techniques, and aims to blend the traditional with the contemporary, highlighting the invisible, and reorienting the practice of fashion to the realm of art.

Maria is a graduate from Parsons School of Design with a MFA in Fashion Design & Society, also holds a BFA in Fashion Design from the British Higher school of Art & Design, Moscow and a Graduate Diploma in Fashion from Central Saint Martins, London.

"Maria debuted with "Jahnkoy" collection at New York Fashion Week 2017 and has been shortlisted by LVMH Prize. Also Kazakova was able to secure a collaboration with Puma and resources from Swarovski for her debut collection, quilting second-hand sports t-shirts with embellished fabrics that swaddled the wearer."

RHX11 Human Storage System by Konstantin Kofta

March 27, 2017 by Arseny Vesnin in Design, Fashion, Ukraine, Portfolios, 2017

Kofta is no ordinary bag designer. His backpacks resemble works of art rather than the emphatically practical and minimalist pieces. This is a melange of imagery, containing raw thoughts, tameless animals, deep forests, abandoned buildings and ancient architecture.

“Humankind is not the first and not the last intelligent race on earth. Erenow, blue blood was flowing in the veins of living creatures. Blood is nothing but a liquid metal. Accomplished technology is indistinguishable from the magic. Mankind has transformed himself and knowledge into artificial intelligence. Existence becomes smarter and faster, it achieves an ability to adapt for radical global changes. The Era of Mankind is coming to its end.”
— Kofta

The Wedgwood by Lee Broom collection

February 23, 2017 by Arseny Vesnin in Design, United Kingdom, Portfolios, 2017

"To celebrate ten years in business, London-based designer Lee Broom has collaborated with British heritage brand Wedgwood on a collection of vases and bowls, pictured below"

"The four vessels, launching this month in a limited edition of 15, have been made in classic Jasperware at Wedgwood’s Stoke-on-Trent factory. Broom drew inspiration from the company’s 250-year-old archives for his pieces, including the 18th century ‘Panther’ vase with its black and white stripes. Treated to glossy finishes and bold splashes of colour, the pieces feel original and new." - text Becky Sunshine for Wallpaper*

Photo: Tom Nicholson

“I’ve been working with Wedgwood on this for a couple of years. I don’t often do collaborations, but this felt right. I’m so happy with the connection between our two brands: the Britishness of it all, one contemporary, one heritage, with references to historical manufacturing.”

STORY: The Levitating Timepiece

February 16, 2017 by Arseny Vesnin in Design, Sweden, 2017

STORY by Swedish Flyte is a levitating timepiece that orbits around a wooden base, counting the hours, minutes or even years.

The designed object was built with three modes. With the Journey setting, you can set your mechanism to a specific date, watching the magnetic ball travel along the circular piece of wood until the ball reaches an upcoming moment such as a vacation or birth of a child. Selecting Clock allows you to use the object more like a traditional timepiece, and finally Timer acts as a short term countdown for kitchen prep or time out.

Titled "Masterpieces never sleep!", Lesha Limonov’s project for the International RijksStudio Award 2017 has been influenced by the idea that paintings stay awake even after the museum halls turn empty at nighttime.

“By trying on the mask with painting character’s eyes, you can be sure that you’ll see true masterpieces in your dream! And your dream will be under protection, because painting heroes stay awake guarding your rest”
