Would Kazimir Malevich Get into Art School Today?

A prank video shows an “art student” meticulously copying the Suprematist works of Kazimir Malevich for a portfolio, then going around and showing his work for admission to a number of art academies under the anagrammatical name of Michael Mikrivaz. This prank’s conceit: that Malevich, or “Mikrivaz,” would be rejected by today’s art establishment, or something. via

Métropolisson by Janol Apin

Janol Apin’s “Métropolisson” is a creative project that illustrates the literal translations of the names of various Parisian Metro station stops. The collection of photographs features more than 100 images of Apin’s friends posing in the underground subway stops; from an astronaut in the Champ de Mars station, to a couple dancing tango under the Argentine stop, he leaves nothing out.

Skull Armchair

Skull Armchair is an ominously powerful looking piece of furniture by French designer Harold Sangouard, aka Harow, that seems fit for anyone interested in comfort as they plot sinister moves. It definitely reminds me the work of another designer Maximo Riera with his series of "The Animal Chair"

Chocolate paints by Nendo

Japanese based studio Nendo recently designed a limited quantity of chocolate-paints for the Seibu Department Store in Japan. They describe their new creation as a "...design that combines the childhood excitement of opening a new box of paints and the thrill of opening a box of chocolates you’ve been given unexpectedly." The twelve boxed chocolate-paint-tubes are flavoured with a different syrup according to the colour of their labels (which also play the role of wrappers)

Olympic Pinup Calendar 2014

Russian officials are going crazy next year, but let's leave all politics and take a look at the new amateur Olympic Pinup Calendar created by Andrew Tarusov (check his previous work "Apocalypse Tomorrow Calendar"). The new Calendar is a kind of humorous answer for the whole political situation around upcoming Winter Games. I won't translate mottos from each page, so please enjoy the Soviet aesthetic graphics below. If you read Russian you can order print version on https://boomstarter.ru/projects/tarusov/pechat_sportivnogo_kalendarya_na_2014_g

An Instagram Short Film

Some of you might remember the first ever video created with Instagram "The Plastics Revolution – Invasión" and some of you who are curious enough to follow TED speeches might remember Blaise Aguera y Arcas speaking about Photosynth - a photo-visualiser using a crowd-sourcing photography from sources like Flickr. Here is a merge of both ideas. As Instagram has its own engine to give access to photos so French director Thomas Jullien made each image a little less ordinary, by weaving hundreds of these similar images together to create a stop-motion video. Jullien aimed to “create structure out of chaos”, and he does so beautifully with 852 different pictures from 852 Instagram users.

Pirelli 2014 Calendar by ... Helmut Newton

Yes, by Helmut Newton and you are not reading Designcollector Back to the Future digest. To celebrate the 50th anniversary of its annual calendar, tire company Pirelli has made the decision to release a set of vintage Helmut Newton portraits from 1986 for its 2014 calendar. The calendar will feature 12 black and white never-before-seen photographs shot on location in Monte Carlo and Chianti. According to The Cut, Newton had to abandon the 1986 shoot due to personal issues, and the photos were stored in the Pirelli archives until earlier this year.

The Void

Audiovisual installation “Void” created by Saint-Petersburg based collective Tundra is an attempt to visualize the idea of emptiness.Emptiness here is regarded not as an absence of everything, but as an initial state when anything can appear. To see how dark room turns into the Big Bang epicenter a visitor should become “empty”. Every move and sound, captured by sensitive equipment, stops the 360 degrees audiovisual flow around.
