OFFF
April 08, 2017 by Arseny Vesnin in OFFF, Motioncollector, Spain, 2017

As the largest European design festival rolls out on the shores of sunny Barcelona, OFFF team decided to rid off traditional "Open Titles".

This year is a game changer as festival approached its 16th instalment, director Hector Ayuso called up OUTRO Studio and under direction of Marc Castellví with Àlex Monner and Greta Fernández they created a short movie "New Senses". The title corresponds to OFFF 2017  Festival concept.

Outro studio have decided to represent OFFF as an essential element, a brand that provides a formula for a sensorial rebirth - everything you see, hear, taste, touch and smell is a first time experience.

In this edition, we decided to kill the Open Titles and introduce you something special. Based on the OFFF Barcelona 2017 campaign, NEW SENSES is a story about a first time experience. INORI Prayer - Real-time Face Projection Mapping

April 03, 2017 by Arseny Vesnin in Digital Art, Japan, Portfolios, Motioncollector, 2017

Nobumichi Asai (previously) released a new experiences with real-time face projection mapping

INORI (prayer) Super High Speed Face Mapping (1000fps) Making https://vimeo.com/210565827 This project is achieved as collaborative work between AYABAMBI,TOKYO, Ishikawa Watanabe Lab, The University of Tokyo and WOW, responding the call for collaboration by Nobumichi Asai (WOW). Staff Nobumichi Asai [Creative Director | Technical Director - WOW] Shingo Abe [CG Director - WOW] Atsushi Yoshimura [Programmer - WOW] Ayaka Motoyoshi [Assistant Producer - WOW] Eiji Tanigawa [Director | Editor - TOKYO] Senzo Ueno [Director of Photography - TOKYO] Toshiyuki Takei / Shinya Masuda [Producer - TOKYO] Minami Chiwaki / Yuma Yoshimura / Kohei Takayama [Production Manager - TOKYO] Suzuko Ohgaki [Making Director - TOKYO] Aya Sato [Choreographer] AyaBambi [Cast] Oi-chan[Management] Shootings Tomorio Takahashi [Gaffer] Hisashi Morikawa / Mie Inaba / Akihiko Imai [Light Assistant] Takashi Ideguchi [Camera 1st Assistant] Shibuya Hiromi / Fujii Ryosuke [Camera 2nd Assistant] Setsu Fukushima / Ryosuke Taniguchi [Music - Ongakushitsu Inc.] Yosuke Nagao [Music Composer] Yasuo Fukuda [Colorist] Ryota Abe [Online Editor] Mizuki Kawano [Mixer - TAIYO KIKAKU co.,ltd] Special Thanks Yoshihiro Watanabe [Ishikawa Watanabe Laboratory,University of Tokyo] Masatoshi Ishikawa [Ishikawa Watanabe Laboratory,University of Tokyo] Tomoaki Teshima [Exvision] TOKYO ELECTRON DEVICE LIMITED Takeshi Yuasa / Kiwamu Sumino / Hiroshi Watase /Toru Yamashita Atsuko Kushima / Tomoaki Kiguchi www.nobumichiasai.com - - - - - - The director, Tanigawa (TOKYO) made a proposal for the theme of “Life.” First, the soundtrack was composed according along the theme. The creative director, WOW’s Technical Director, Asai and the CG Director, Abe was inspired by the music and then made face mapping work. Aya Sato designed choreography. The crew of TOKYO, which Tanigawa directs, completed the project by making the video work. The music brought Asai the image of “the radioactive.” The destructive force of the radioactive could cause “death,” “suffering,” and “sorrow.” And “prayers” could overcome them. These subjects infuse AYABAMBI’s powerful performance. Their performance crushes and conquer black tears, skulls and the Heart Sutra. We built up the concept during the production and Abe designed animation for face mapping. There was a big challenge in technical aspects. We realized the new mapping system that allows us to follow intense performances by using the latest 1,000 fps projector, DynaFlash(*1) and a super speed sensor. It is very new and it had not been done before. Projected images become part of their skin and they transform their faces. At the beginning of our development, there was an issue, AYABAMBI would loose freedom of performances if we accelerated the tracking speed. Asai, Yoshimura (WOW), Lecturer Watanabe and Teshima (EXVISION) explored how we could keep the tracking speed securing the freedom of performances, taking three months of trial and error to reduce a few milliseconds. And we finally developed this system(*2). AYABAMBI is a dance unit who is internationally acclaimed working with Madonna and high fashion brands. TOKYO is an international award winning video production and famous for videos and commercial films employing technologies. Ishikawa Watanabe Laboratory, the University of Tokyo focuses on the study of the innovative computer vision. This was an exciting opportunity that these talents met WOW, which has amazed the world with tech art like face mapping and VFX. *1 “DynaFlash” is developed jointly by Ishikawa Watanabe Laboratory, the University of Tokyo and is commercialized by Tokyo Electron Device Limited. *2 For tracking hands, we use the dynamic projection mapping technology developed by Ishikawa Watanabe Laboratory, the University of Tokyo. For tracking faces, we use the face mapping technology developed by the visual design studio, WOW inc.

About the Work This work was made as a side project to ‘kagami / real-time face generator.’ It can also be seen as a continuation of the real-time face tracking/ projection mapping project ‘Connected Colors,’ which used the colors of the natural world as its theme. As with ‘kagami’, the theme for this work is the beauty of nature. The Japanese word ‘kachofugetsu’ is a compound derived from flower (ka), bird (cho), wind (fu), and moon (getsu), and is intended to evoke the beauty, diversity and harmony of Japan’s natural treasures. Humans once lived as a part of nature, leading spiritual lives in the midst of its bracing aesthetic. Through the medium of electric make-up art, this work encapsulates the idea that this natural beauty contains a set of aesthetic values and a sense of identity of which Japan ought to be proud. In addition to existing technologies, this work introduces a newly designed 4K/240P projector in order to further improve the delicate feel of the skin and make-up and the sense of dynamic motion. Nobumichi Asai (WOW) acted as creative and technical director for ‘kagami’ and ‘Kacho Fugetsu,’ overseeing the planning and development of the project. Noboru Tomizawa, who also collaborated on ‘Connected Colors’, oversaw the makeup art. Beautiful makeup art provides a base over which WOW’s CG animation is projected to evoke the vivacity and motion of nature. Music was provided by hatis noit, using a tonal palette exclusively composed of sounds from nature. Using sounds from her native Hokkaido, the sound of the wind over the plains, running water, bird song etc., hatis noit creates a sound-scape drawn from her own memories. Staff 【Project Member】 Media Artist : Nobumichi Asai [WOW] CG Artist : Shingo Abe [WOW] Make-Up Artist : Noboru Tomizawa [CUBE Management Office] - - - - - Creative Director : Nobumichi Asai [WOW] Producer : Shinichi Saeki [WOW] Project Manager : Ayaka Motoyoshi [WOW] Director : Shingo Abe [WOW] CG Designer : Tsutomu Miyajima [WOW], Ryo Kitabatake [WOW] Technical Director : Nobumichi Asai [WOW] , Atsushi Yoshimura [WOW] Director of Photography, Colorist : Takatoshi Suzuki Gaffer:Seiichi Iwamaru Movie Retoucher : Masanori Obe [foton inc.] Projector Engineer : Tetsuya Fujii [Cinefocus], Masaki Morita [Cinefocus], Masaya Kamino [Cinefocus] Stylist : DAN Music & Vocalist : hatis noit Model : Nanami [FLOS inc.] 【Special Thanks】 PLEATS PLEASE ISSEY MIYAKE foton inc. An emotional homage to Switzerland, nature, music and life in all its facets.

Auditory perception is triggered by tonal phenomenon, such as language and music. "Artist Refik Anadol [previously] has used the element of light to create an immersive Infinity environment that surrounds visitors in an all-encompassing spectrum of illumination. set at the SXSW festival in Austin, Texas, the installation forms part of Anadol’s ongoing research into audio/visual spaces. Believe in More

March 08, 2017 by Arseny Vesnin in Advertising, Motioncollector, Turkey, Russia, 2017

"Some weeks ago, we saw Nike release a number of local-market spots for women, in what we suspected was a push to convey a larger, global message..

Just in time for International Women’s Day, Wieden + Kennedy Amsterdam—which created them—had the Russia, Middle East and Turkey ads subtitled in English. The agency also revealed they are indeed part of bigger campaign, with the tagline, “Believe in More.

They also coincide with news that Nike is launching a Pro Hijab line for veiled Muslim women, which goes on sale in spring 2018.”

Russia: “What Are Girls Made Of?”

You're made of what you do. #BelieveinMore #JustDoIt

The Middle East: “What Will They Say About You?”

What will they say about you? Maybe they'll say you showed them what was possible. #Believeinmore #JustDoIt

Turkey: “This Is Us”

Interactive Event Posters by Studio Feixen

Beside neat posters with sharp Swiss grids and clean typography that we reviewed last year, Studio Feixen noted for their interactive events micro-sites.

“For us it was clear that we wanted to design something that stretches the borders of what you usually see these days. We think there’s a lot to do in the area of interaction, animation and graphic design. And especially when it comes to moving typography.”
— Felix, Studio Feixen

SPLIT

February 28, 2017 by Arseny Vesnin in Motioncollector, USA, Portfolios

Throughout our lives, we often inspire undue stress and anxiety by viewing our existence with a “dualistic mind.” We create a world of private duality, a world that is limited to fixed or black and white thinking. We do this because it gives us a (false) sense of security and control over life’s uncertainties. The dualistic mind tricks us into thinking we have this “life” thing figured out, and we don’t have to struggle and search anymore.

Directed by Vincenzo Lodigiani, a NY based motion artist and animation director..

1976 by Aggressive

February 27, 2017 by Arseny Vesnin in Agencies, Motioncollector, USA, 2017

1976 meditates on presentiment and sound. The surreal short crafts an unsettling atmosphere of foreshadowing and immanent change. A clever combination of live footage and CGI, the film allows its soundtrack to drive the visuals. Everyday objects reverberate, twist and react to an oncoming pulse of events as they converge on a farmhouse lost in rural America.
A film by Aggressive, The Loop & Echoic.

Alex Topaller of Grammy Award-winning, New York-based director duo Aggressive talks about their atmospheric exploration of sound:

“The film meditates on presentiment and sound. It is a collaboration between myself and Dan Shapiro, Moscow-based art directors The Loop (aka Alex Mikhaylov and Max Chelyadnikov) and sound design studio Echoic’s David Johnston and Tom Gilbert. A combination of live footage and CGI, we intended the soundtrack to drive the visuals. Everyday objects reverberate, twist and react to an oncoming pulse of events as they converge on a farm house in rural America”

Recently debuted on NOWNESS , Detour is the fashion movie directed by Anna Radchenko, exploring a study of one woman's sensual solitary experience

“In Detour my heroin arrives in quite an unusual space where she at first enjoys herself and her new encounters, but then the mood changes dramatically, there is chase, heartbeat, and who knows if she manages to finally leave at the end?”
— Anna Radchenko

Mainframe Animations

February 07, 2017 by Arseny Vesnin in Advertising, Agencies, Motioncollector, United Kingdom, 2017

London-based studio Mainframe shares their latest work that can visually describes an akward state of "cognitive dissonance" everyone faced in his life few or more times.

Hi [insert client name here], We think we're nearly there on this. It’d be great to get your thoughts/comments and of course, let us know if you spot anything obviously wrong. Best, Mainframe - This was an experimental film put together simply as an opportunity to have a play in-between projects. After much deliberation we set ourselves a brief to create a collection of scenarios subverting the physical properties of...anything. It made for some interesting comments along the way. “That egg’s not bouncy enough, the cloth coming out of the tap needs to feel more like water, the bowling ball needs to feel heavier as it floats off…”. We suddenly realised we were playing our own client (hence the in-joke above) This is FauxPhysics_09_FINAL_V16_ForApproval_FINAL_withAudio_FINAL_1.mov ;·) We've started lots of these projects over the years. This rare creature is one that's finally found its way out of the studio. And no, it wasn’t at all annoying to see this peach https://vimeo.com/191444383 appear on Vimeo half way through the process. ◔_◔ All produced in Maya 2017, rendered in Vray and composited in After Effects. CLIENT: KISS TV CONCEPT/DESIGN/ANIMATION: Mainframe ART DIRECTOR: Daniel Wood @ KISS TV SOUND: Shookz Mainframe were recently invited by Box Plus Network to create a series of idents for their music channel Kiss TV. With Kiss being at the forefront of Music TV in the U.K. the brief for the idents was to created something innovative, visually stunning and different to anything else on UK TV screens. We pushed the boundaries in terms of look and feel with these idents. Spending large amounts of time doing research and development, particularly in new forms of procedural animation, gave us tools we needed to create something truly original. The Box Plus team were particularly supportive of this experimental way of working and hopefully the results are worth the effort everyone put into the project. There are four main strands that pay homage to the synergy between fashion and music, each intertwined with a distinctive party mood: bling, club, pop and urban that also reflect the range of the channel’s music policy. The brand is taken into an abstract, intergalactic world, on a journey of high energy, form and colour. ‘Bling’ brings the luxe of hip hop and glam pop with reflective, glittering, metallic textures and fluid, melding animations. ‘Club’ embodies the energy of house and techno, glowing lights and lasers, and repetitive beating movements. ‘Pop’ provides imagery derived from pop funk and pop rap, colourful, vibrant hues, and frenetic, bold animations. Finally, ‘urban’ ident draws inspiration from garage and grime, with dark, moody tones lit up with molten lava and animated at an explosive pace. Within the animations, two objects touch - representing a ‘kiss’ - to create a chain reaction culminating in a distinctive logo resolve. The faceted and folding mechanic is used as a constant to create a familiar thread across the four distinct looks - showcasing four facets of the one channel. Specially composed tracks by Nottingham Bass DJ/producer Shookz - one of the Midlands’ most diverse and exciting musical talents - adds multi-dimensional layers to the four idents. Inspiration for these tracks has come from youth production workshops in Mansfield, Shookz’s remix work, and his immersion in a range of sub-genres of electronic dance music.

Mondegreen

February 03, 2017 by Arseny Vesnin in Digital Art, Motioncollector, 2017

Set in a surreal museum of mishearing, 'Mondegreen' features a series of kinetic sculptures each representing a different word that sounds like 'Found'.

The film is part of an ongoing initiative to keep pushing ourselves both technically and creatively and was made in collaboration with Esteban Diácono. The brooding soundtrack was composed by Echoic Audio.

Design, direction and animation: Found & Esteban Diácono
Music and sound design: Echoic Audio

A ‘mondegreen’ is defined as ‘a misunderstood or misinterpreted word or phrase resulting from mishearing’. Our eponymous film is set in a surreal museum of mishearing, featuring a series of kinetic sculptures that each represent a different word that sounds like ‘Found’. Mondegreen is part of an ongoing series of research and development projects we’re undertaking, to keep pushing ourselves technically and creatively. In collaboration with Esteban Diácono and Echoic Audio.
