When Data Dreams: Messi, Anadol, and the Poetry of a Goal

July 31, 2025 by Arseny Vesnin in 2025, AI Art, Art, Digital Art, USA, Motioncollector

In a fusion that blurs the line between memory and machine, Christie’s, Inter Miami CF, and global football legend Lionel Messi have unveiled a collaboration with Refik Anadol - the generative artist known for transforming data into emotion.

At the heart of this historic partnership lies a single moment: Messi’s gravity-defying header in the 2009 Champions League Final against Manchester United. It wasn’t just a goal — it was a moment when time paused. For the first time in his 20-year career, Messi has personally selected it as his most meaningful, and it is now being reborn through the lens of Anadol’s algorithmic imagination.

Using match data, Messi’s biometric signals, and AI-trained models that interpret emotion, Anadol has crafted a digital tapestry that transcends traditional sports iconography. The result is not merely a visualization — it’s a sensory archive, a pulse of Messi’s past reinterpreted as flowing light and computational rhythm.

Christie’s, known for supporting innovative art, ended the online auction with a final bid of $1,835,000. All money raised will help UNICEF and education programs in Latin America and the Caribbean. This is charity that connects the past with a better future.

For once, “artwork for the ages” is real. This isn’t a statue or photo—it’s a living record of emotion and skill, created by combining AI and sports. It shows Messi’s past, Anadol’s vision, and how art, once limited to paintings, now moves through data.

AI Museum Dataland by Refik Anadol

September 26, 2024 by Arseny Vesnin in 2024, AI Art, Digital Art, USA

Refik Anadol, the artist known for his mesmerising visualisations of data, is set to open the world’s first artificial intelligence (A.I.) art museum.

Dataland, scheduled to open in Los Angeles in 2025, will provide a permanent home for Refik's AI works. This reaffirms Anadol’s considerable cachet and the appeal of his algorithmic art.

The museum will be located inside the Grand L.A., a mixed-use development designed by Frank Gehry. This development includes a luxury hotel, apartments, and entertainment facilities. Dataland is part of the growing cultural corridor in Downtown Los Angeles, which includes the Museum of Contemporary Art, the Broad, the Music Center venues, and the Walt Disney Hall performing arts center. In 2018, Anadol used dozens of 50K projectors to cast shapeshifting videos onto the surface of the Walt Disney Hall.

The inaugural exhibitions of DATALAND will be expressed through Refik Anadol Studio’s Large Nature Model, the world’s first open source AI model based solely on nature data

For DATALAND, Refik Anadol Studio is building a groundbreaking initiative — the Large Nature Model, the world’s first open source, generative AI model dedicated to nature, trained on the most extensive, ethically collected dataset of the natural world.

“We’re pioneering a unique approach by training our Large Nature Model algorithms on nature’s inherent intelligence. This diverges from the majority of Large Language AI Models that rely on human intellect.”
