Fries Vansevenant
Fries Vansevenant builds portraits like puzzles, locking geometric shapes into a fixed portrait frame until a character emerges.
The Ghent-based digital collage artist works in a contemporary Cubist idiom, constructing iconic faces from flat planes and angular fragments. Each composition begins as a problem to solve — how to suggest a profile, a gaze, a recognisable silhouette using only geometric abstraction. The constraint of the fixed ratio becomes the engine of the work, forcing economy and precision.
The method crystallised with a portrait of The Joker, made after watching The Dark Knight for the thirty-fifth time. That piece became the foundation — flat 2D perspective, profile portraiture, and bold shape-building locked into place.
“Through my work, I don’t take you back to the past; instead, I show how it still walks alongside us.”
From that single experiment, a visual language emerged: pop culture figures rebuilt as graphic puzzles, nostalgia rendered in clean geometry.
