The Mac to the Future, Concept

German tech website CURVED/labs has envisioned how Apple’s design history could be better honored, and the result, even managing to find a new use for the iconic floppy drive on the lower right side of the front panel, is stunning. The ‘Mac to the Future,’ based on the shape of a Mac 128K, would have the respectable inner components of an 11-inch MacBook Air, but with a special twist: it would be usable either as a regular desktop computer or as a Mac OS-based touch-screen device. And where the floppy disk slot once was are now slots for SD cards, the FaceTime camera, speakers and a microphone.

Chocolatexture by Japanese Nendo

"Japanese design office Nendo has created 9 different types of chocolate. While each of them are the same size, not a single piece from the Chocolatexture ( created for the Maison & Objet Trade Fair) collection look alike. That’s because Oki Sato, who leads the Tokyo and Milan-based firm, rethought the concept of chocolate by focusing on texture. “There are many factors that determine a chocolate’s taste,” says Sato, referring to factors like the origin of cocoa, the percentage used, and the various different flavors. But by instead turning his attention to attributes like pointy, smooth and rough, the designer has created distinctive chocolates that all use identical ingredients but taste completely different due to the various textures." writes Colossal

Lapka x Project Ara

I am not sure if you are familiar with Russia-born startup Lapka. Briefly speaking they produce tiny, beautifully designed personal environment monitor that connects to your phone to measure, collect and analyze the hidden qualities of your surroundings. Their latest addition to the family was a breathalyzer BAM. But what we are going to share is their proof of concept made for the well-known Project Ara, the new modular mobile device. Citing Lapka "At Lapka, we reimagine and redesign the scientific devices to turn them into stylish and accessible tools. Our products are healthcare accessories which connect to your smartphone. What if Lapka creates a separate line of these accessories in order to support Ara’s eco-system? Here is our concept of Project Ara modules."

"..we’ve imagined seven modules based on Lapka’s current and possible product line following our Environment + Body grid."

Frameworks One

What if displaying your favorite photos were more like playing your favorite vinyl records? A couple of Swedish designers want to introduce a similar ecosystem of “discs,” sleeves, and “players” to the world of photo frames. The idea is called the Frameworks One, a backlit frame for printed photos that can quickly be physically swapped in and out. Preorder it on Kickstarter

Embaracing The Touch Chair Concept

Marija Puipaite Lithuanian designer inspired by physicality, in love with tangible matter and suffering from visual fetishism.Embracing the Touch is a project about designer’s relation with the works and designer’s presence in them. Design is a matter, tangible and desirable, that carries meaning in itself, in its body. It’s what you understand and experience through physicality. It’s like a garment that you can try on, see how it looks on you. The same way you project yourself through someone else.

Armstrong: The Light Trap

Russian designers Maxim Ali and Constantin Bolimond created a small interactive lamp with cork plugs to control the amount of light coming out of a sphere. They called it Amstrong with no doubts linking the name with the Moon mission.

Goat Mug by Desnahemisfera

Goat is a practical and sustainable coffee mug, paying homage to the goats that discovered coffee. Its horn shape not only tells the original story of coffee but also helps you drink the last sip and makes you look good (I bet guys know the thing about Georgian festive tradition of drinking wine from horns). The leather holder simply turns into a coffee mug stand, so you can easily keep the mug on your desk. Designed by Slovenian Desnahemisfera studio and available for preorder on Kickstarter Project (just reserved one for myself:)

Wong Kar Wine Winebar, Saint-Petersburg by Plan-S23

The expansion of European wine culture to Asia have not been that huge so far as during the last decade. The juxtaposition of classic winery and asian food went very well, and inspired a lot of urban food points. St.Petersburg-based happy three friends were no exception to open a new bar with a tricky name of "Wong Kar Wine" that has mixed up the love to good wine, movies and asian food at one place. Guys asked Plan-S23 design studio to create the space, and without any doubts Maxim Scherbakov and Kate Tolstykh did their best. The clean-shaped bar furniture has been created by VERSTAK Studio and unique wooden panels - by PROKK. So it happens that the full trio of studios came from Saint-Petersburg what make a big sense when speaking about local Russian design.

The Super Moon Lamp by Nosinger

The so called Supermoon – the lunar occurrence on March 19th, 2011 in which the moon appeared 14% bigger and 30% brighter – shined down on the people of Japan, inspiring them to believe, and have hope for, rebuilding what they had lost just over a week ago. The Moon is a topographically-accurate LED light that was created based on data retrieved from the Japanese lunar orbiter spacecraft Kaguya, designed by Nosinger Design Team from Japan supermoon-nosinger1

Irish artist Ruby Robin (Facebook) creates handcrafted jewellery that contains little bits and pieces of nature.

My handcrafted jewellery is designed to allow the quiet beauty of nature to shine, to stir the imagination, inspire wonder and encapsulate a microcosm of long forgotten memories. I make my jewellery using a range of strange and beautiful curiosities, found in the woods and on the mountain sides, on the windswept beaches and wild meadows.

MINI Citysurfer Concept

Mini skipped the car business entirely at the 2014 Los Angeles Auto Show and rode a new path to miniaturisation with the Citysurfer Concept electric scooter. Conceived as a last-mile solution for urban commuters, the folding two-wheeler enables the motorist to park the car and scoot to the office through dense (bicycle-friendly) city traffic.

The Citysurfer’s electronic bits, including a lithium-ion battery pack, are mounted inside the weather-resistant body work. A rear-wheel hub motor, operated via a thumb throttle, can propel the scooter as far as 15 miles and to a top speed of 15mph. The scooter includes charging cables for a conventional household outlet and a 12-volt automotive socket. When completely discharged, the electric motor simply switches off and disengages, and the journey continues on leg power. via BBC Autos
