Portraits as landscapes of inner states by Dmitriy Grechko
What can be a mirror for human emotions? In his art, Dmitriy Grechko is looking for answers to this question, along with the continuous search for the face as a reflection of emotions, memory, and inspiration.
He is drawn to the human presence, especially the female figure, as both subject and symbol — a vessel of strength, fragility, and timeless beauty. The brutality of expressionism in his portraits is interpreted from his own point of view, where faces are transformed into landscapes of inner states. It becomes a place where silence, mystery, and imagination meet. We experience how this depiction goes beyond traditional portrait painting through Dmitriy’s expressive brushstrokes and thick layers of paint. The face becomes a strange and indeterminate terrain through the use of acrylic paints, a palette knife, and wide, expressive strokes.
The texture and layering of colour create both structure and spontaneity, allowing emotion to shape figures on the canvas. Dmitriy’s approach is based on freedom and energy, expanding toward a more contemporary language — bold, direct, and multidimensional.
Last year, Grechko took part in the 23rd Israeli Art Exhibition for mental health, showing his work Silent Strength. With its distinctive thick brushstrokes, deep colours and a powerful emotional effect, this picture became a part of a grandiose exhibition dedicated to overcoming emotional trauma. The work is an invitation to the viewer to look beyond the surface, to enter into dialogue with the unseen, and to find within the face a reflection of their own inner world and feelings.
The show featured approximately 600 works by leading and promising artists in the Bank Hapoalim administration building in Tel Aviv. A record number of visitors were able to view the artworks — more than 6,000 people.
