Last week it was a special moment for Polish design scene. To celebrate the heritage of Polish graphic design - The Capital City of Warsaw, European Design Awards, Element Talks and Polish Graphic Design Awards organised a number of creative events, where Designcollector was hearty invited and participated
123 Polish posters you don’t want to miss
Association of Polish Graphic Designers (@stgupl) invited guests to the European Design Festival 2019 Opening. The event took place in the building of the Poster Museum at Wilanów. Altogether it consisted of a ceremonial inauguration of the festival, a preview of the exhibition "123 Polish posters you don’t want miss"and afterparty in a beautiful garden belonging to the museum.
The exhibition running through June 31, aims to present 123 posters that have significantly influenced the development of visual communication in Poland and the world.
Element Talks 2019
Designcollector was honoured to be invited by European Design Festival and Adam Mickiewicz Institute to Element Talks conference that took a part in renovated Print House on outskirt of Warsaw.
Element Talks is the biggest conference for graphic designers in Poland which touches upon practical aspects of working in the creative sector. The watchword of this year’s edition is PORTFOLIO IS DEAD. The organisers want to ponder upon the portfolio and whether it still is a designer’s showcase. And we had a plenty chances to watch young attendees leaving no chance for speakers to escape without a decent amount of questions and answers. Designcollector also shared with the youngsters how we organised first ever Behance Portfolio Reviews, our own events at Digital Decade and shared the view on how to be prepared for a harsh reality of commercial world.
Exhibitions of Polish Artists
Apart from a huge Pride happening in Warsaw these days we had a chance to visit a number of Exhibitions organised by European Design Festival and Polish partners.
Karol Śliwka Retrospective
One of it was the largest monographic exhibition on Karol Śliwka, an outstanding graphic designer, the creator of over 400 logos that have been a part of Polish everyday life for the past sixty years, shaping the iconosphere of the public space. Sliwka was definitely an influencer for late Soviet graphic artists as we shared a similar part of history that times.
Graduation Show 2019
The exhibition we visited next presented 30 MA and BA projects by graduates of design studies from the Czech Republic, Poland, Slovakia, and Hungary.
NACISK Festival of Art
Our favourite part of exhibitions roll (btw they were situated in Palace of Culture, infamous Soviet-era Moscow-like building) was a visit to NACISK Festival (@NACISK_fest) where we met our favourite illustrators Patryk Hardziej, Bartosz Kosowski and our new friend Ewelina Dymek
European Design Awards Ceremony
The latest point of our Warsaw visit was the Gala event at Nowy Teatr for announcing European Design Awards winners. Designcollector was invited to join Dionne van Dijk on scene to name the winner of Digital Category where Designcollector took a part as jury since 2013.
Warm evening ended with awarding more than 100 winners in each category including Gran Prise went to Russian award-winning agency Voskhod.
A characteristic feature of the EDA competition is the fact that it encompasses diverse areas of design: from prints, through branding, to webdesign. The jury is comprised of representatives of design media (editors, publishers and journalists) from all over the Europe which ensures objective and unbiased project selection.
