VLADIMIR TOMIN – RULE 30
Motion designer, Khabarovsk, Russia

Project: Motion piece “Rule 30″

What is your project about?
This work is about finding right input for relatively simple sets of rules to turn them into sophisticated systems. The ant in very beginning symbolizes an abstract input. When it touches a liquid – a bunch of different spheres appears, symbolizing different versions of parallel realities. Then until the very final shot we see some of those parallel realities, and some of those realities are semi-related to each other. Final part is about new beginning and death.
The whole project was inspired by this TED talk by Stephen Wolfram “Computing A Theory Of Everything”
What was the main challenge you faced?
Funny enough, the main challenge was a coloring. Because I wanted all scenes to look a bit different but the same time I wanted to maintain the same visual style for the whole shot. So it took me long enough to color it in the way I wanted, a lot of testing, going back and forward. Also it was hard enough to grab the whole concept together, because for about a week I saw a different parts of this projects in my head floating around refusing to become the whole. But in the end I somehow managed to glue it all together.
Did you client, you and the audience get a satisfaction from the project?
This project was part of Russian Creative Panel presentation at OFFF 2011 and also was featured at OFFF official DVD so I think you can say it was a success (Author: Yes, damn, it was!). But it wasn’t featured on Motionographer, and I’d really like that.
As for me personally, I never satisfied with my projects.
