I painted a new series of 15 canvases during my August 2011 residency in Moscow. The series is broken into 2 parts – half greyscale and half full spectrum color. A nice shift in gravity of the key ingredients.

Sun Ray Ricochet is a new series of canvas paintings by American graphic artist Matt M. Moore. Painted during an August 2011 residency in Moscow for Sretenka Design Week and inspired by experiences and excursions in the city.
Designcollector was happy to meet Matt before, at OFFF2011, so we asked Matt to talk about his project.

What is your project about?
“Sun Ray Ricochet” is my current exhibition on display during Sretenka Design Week in Moscow. The artworks and sculptures were actualized during two trips to Russia in the past few months. In August I came and worked on the series of 15 large canvas paintings. During this residency I also painted some big walls and gave a master class lecture at British Higher School of Design. Then I returned in October to paint the fleet of 3D sculptures, give another lecture at Tsvetnoy, attend the opening of my exhibition, and of course… paint more murals in downtown Moscow. I had an awesome time here. I am already looking forward to returning and doing more art, design, and installation projects. And I really want to travel around to other cities and paint more big murals.

The Details : Up close the work has a beautiful balance of precision and microscopic imperfections.
What was the main challenge you faced?
Everything went very smooth thanks to the logistical support and smart strategy of my team. Thanks Irina, Tatyana, and Vera! There were a lot of different things going on all at once, and we all worked around the clock to get everything completed in time for the exhibition. I am a very process oriented artist. Efficiency is a key ingredient to the way I work. So it is always a bit of a challenge to arrive in a foreign land and set up temporary studios to create new series of work. But you know what they say… “Pressure makes diamonds!” Thankfully things worked out great in the different spaces I was painting in. The only bump in the road was the unpredictable weather. This resulted in me painting murals in two different archways instead of one big wall. Double the fun!

A nice big greyscale mural in a downtown Moscow archway – The Sky With Diamonds.
Have you and the audience got satisfaction from it?
Absolutely! This is my favorite, and most comprehensive, exhibition yet. The canvases and sculptures are a great combo. I had a lot of fun working on each phase of the project. Especially the greyscale series of paintings and the “Sky With Diamonds” monochrome mural. My favorite time was my last day in Moscow when Petro, Slak, and I painted a big collaborative mural. Those guys are great. Top notch artists and real great guys. As far as the people of Moscow… Everyone I’ve spoken with really enjoyed the exhibition and all of the happenings of Sretenka Design Week. It has been a great success. Hopefully it can be twice as big next year!

My favorite part… A longtime dream come true… A fleet of large three-dimensional sculpture paintings!
