Mannerism, Impressionism, Surrealism. We’re all familiar with historical, genre-defining art works. But what is Forwardism?
Forwardism depicts the reimagining of convention, transforming what we thought we knew into something new, something we thought was impossible, and yet here it is before our eyes.
We were challenged to craft visual metaphors of this concept, transforming historical art epochs into works of Forwardism, drawing a parallel to BMW’s re-imagining of what a car should be. The i7 - a magnificent work of design, engineering, and craftsmanship, the flagship of Forwardism.

A new reality: Maxim Zhestkov for BMW

To celebrate the reveal of the new all-electric BMW i4, BMW invited Russian media artist Maxim Zhestkov to freely interpret the new vehicle, and create a series of digital artworks using the BMW i4 design and technology as his inspiration. The result is a series that is as mesmerising as it is unique.

“I started out studying traditional architecture, but somewhere down the road I came to realise that the 3D software we used for mapping and modelling had so much more potential. It felt like it was being used to create the final product or output, and then… the process was seen as over. It was very finite, and it just didn’t sit right with me. But then I saw that, in fact, the software, if I found a way to use it right, could become much more. It could be used to discover and experiment in ways that didn’t have a goal in itself. It could be the way itself; the means to explore .something new and unexpected.”

Zhestkov describes this realisation as a process of “personal and creative liberation.” By plugging into the ever-evolving and ever more advanced visualisation and rendering software he had available, he was able to explore spatiality, physics, visuals and mathematics in a way he hadn’t thought possible. He quickly became hooked.

Airo Car by Heatherwick Studio

London-based Heatherwick Studio has unveiled its concept for the Airo electric car for IM Motors that will "vacuum up pollutants from other cars".

Named Airo, the electric car will be fitted with a HEPA – high-efficiency particulate air – filtering system that will actively clean pollution. It will have both autonomous and driver-controlled modes.

“Airo isn’t simply another electric car that doesn’t pollute the air. Instead, using the latest HEPA-filter technology, it goes further by also vacuuming up pollutants from other cars as it drives along.”

The car has been designed with a flexible interior with rotating seats so that it can be reconfigured into a "multi-functional room".

With the seats facing each other a four-leaf table can be unfolded to create a dining space or a screen extended to watch films or play games.

The car's interior can also be turned into a bedroom as the contoured seats fully recline to create a double bed

The car, which is set to go into production in 2023, was designed for IM Motors – a car brand created by Chinese car company SAIC Motor, online retailer Alibaba Group and the Zhangjiang Hi-Tech Group.

MINI Vision Urbanaut #NextGen

“Adopting a remote lifestyle seems more realistic than ever, and this week, MINI proved yet another way to do it. On Tuesday, the BMW-owned automotive marque unveiled an experimental ‘Vision Urbanaut’ car that imagines the living room to be on the go.”

“The concept, modeled like a small camper van, bears a metallic green exterior, light-up wheels, and gradient windows.
The Urbanaut extends upon MINI’s core of the “Clever Use of Space” with a dashboard that can be lowered into a daybed and front seats that swivel around, so the driver can relax or interact with other passengers when not steering the wheel.”

Vision Simplex by Mercedes

Vision Simplex concept pays tribute to technically the first-ever Mercedes...

This is the Vision Mercedes Simplex concept, and it will never be put into production. The Simplex pays homage to the first ever car to wear the Mercedes name – the Mercedes 35 HP (or 35 PS in German) from 1901. The 35 was developed at the request of wealthy businessman and occasional racer Emil Jellinek, and was the first car to move away from the traditional high-riding motorised carriage design.

Fiat 500 Spiaggina

It's been a while since our last post in "Cars" flow and we really like to keep it clean for beautiful examples of automotive industry. Here is another eye-catching sample worth for being outside, near the beach.

Marking the 60th anniversary since the unveiling of the first special edition car based on the model 500 - the 500 Jolly, known as "Spiaggina," Fiat showcased their new limited edition of the latest Fiat 500. Called the Fiat 500 Spiaggina ’58, the new model is limited to 1958 units. A number which is an homage to the year Fiat showcased the original 500 Jolly, a car adored by rich and famous of the time.

The changes Garage Italia made to the Fiat 500C in an effort to convert the car into a true Spiaggina are, frankly, astounding. The job was so work-intense and perilous that Garage Italia partnered with famed Pininfarina to bring the job to a close. With their expertise in the creation of show cars, Pininfarina and Garage Italia came up with a 500 featuring a lowered windscreen, a rollover bar instead of a roof and only two seats.

"The piece symbolizes the timelessness of the off-road legend and makes a conscious reference to the natural phenomenon of insects preserved in amber. With it, the german auto manufacturer wants to portray through an art piece that these characteristics have been handed down from generation to generation, making it the perfect symbol for the premier of the classic’s newest version."

BMW Vision Next 100 Concept

The German carmaker is celebrating its 100th anniversary by unveiling a new concept car for the future; among its innovations is a self-driving mode which alters the car's appearance. German carmaker BMW has revealed its concept of the car of the future, called the BMW Vision Next 100 Concept.

Picar - Pedal-powered Morgan's Trike

The Ekomobil company of Minsk has created a pedal-powered replica of Morgan’s trike. Based on drawings of the very first racing models, the cunning Picar lives up to the classic’s riveted retro glory, with a wood veneer dash, leather trim and polished faux exhaust pipes emerging from cylinders of a faux engine.

Powered by your breakfast, the Picar’s chain drivetrain runs through a three-speed Shimano Nexus hub on the rear wheel. An optional battery pack powers an audio player, turn indicators and headlights. There’s even a human-electric hybrid version available, with a 1000-watt motor capable of pushing the car to a brisk 25mph. And rest assured, although a youthful outlook is required to drive the Picar, actual youth is not; the car’s single-seat cockpit easily accommodates drivers as tall as six feet.

Peugeot “Le Bistro du Lion” Foodtruck

Rare addition to our Automotive Design flow. This time Peugeot Design Lab came with the concept of “Le Bistro du Lion” foodtruck. "The custom van comes with a matching trailer and together they become on location a pop-up restaurant. From a full kitchen, coffee machine down to a DJ booth, the concept thought of pretty much everything. Food-truck specialist Euromag outfitted the truck with all the kitchen equipment and the coffee machine is provided by Rocket. The new restaurant on wheels will take up residence at Milan Design Week 2015 on 14 April, before heading to the French Pavilion at the 2015 World’s Fair, Expo Milano, where the theme will be “Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life.” Peugeot has selected the talented French chef Sven Chartier, of Saturne and Le Clown Bar in Paris, as the first culinary tenant of Le Bistrot du Lion. With food truck concepts becoming bigger globally, we would not be surprised if some car makers actually start catering more targeted concepts to that particular market in the future." says Highsnobiety

"As urban streets are increasingly shared between drivers and cyclists, road safety is more of an issue than ever before. In the UK, more than 19,000 cyclists are involved in accidents every year. Many of these collisions take place in London, where the city’s often old, narrow streets make it difficult to accommodate both four-wheeled and two-wheeled drivers. Swedish car manufacturer Volvo (which has been making some noise in the design world lately) is now addressing the problem with the introduction of its new product Life Paint, which just launched in London."

MINI Citysurfer Concept

Mini skipped the car business entirely at the 2014 Los Angeles Auto Show and rode a new path to miniaturisation with the Citysurfer Concept electric scooter. Conceived as a last-mile solution for urban commuters, the folding two-wheeler enables the motorist to park the car and scoot to the office through dense (bicycle-friendly) city traffic.

The Citysurfer’s electronic bits, including a lithium-ion battery pack, are mounted inside the weather-resistant body work. A rear-wheel hub motor, operated via a thumb throttle, can propel the scooter as far as 15 miles and to a top speed of 15mph. The scooter includes charging cables for a conventional household outlet and a 12-volt automotive socket. When completely discharged, the electric motor simply switches off and disengages, and the journey continues on leg power. via BBC Autos

Magpul Ronin Motorbike

A few years ago the folks at Denver, Colorado-based Magpul gave us the Ronin concept bike, based on the American-built Buell 1125R. As rarely happens with concepts from smaller shops, Magpul is turning the Ronin into a limited edition production bike.

In keeping with its namesake, Magpul is only producing 47 Ronin bikes, one for each of the 47 Ronin Warriors from Japanese lore. Additionally, each bike will have one of the warriors’ names engraved on it, and on the bike’s toolkit. The bikes will be released in staggered series pricing out around the $40k USD mark. The earlier releases will be slightly less expensive, as the final five will each be a completely bespoke design. For more information head over to the bike’s official website.
